You do realize that Superfetch is not designed to improve boot times, right? Superfetch is designed to improve the load times of the applications you most often use.

With my Penryn Processor and 3GB, all of my applications start instantly or within seconds. I'd rather wait a split second more for my app to open, than have my HD being almost constantly accessed when I'm not doing anything.

It's doesn't matter whether it does or doesn't. My system boots quicker and the programs open just as fast without both these Vista marketing features turned on. And as Lou said all without watching my hard drive get beat to death with all the thrashing. :p

Superfetch does NOT thrash the hard drive. Once it loads into memory the items it anticipates you will need, it's job is done. And despite your suggestions to the contrary, if allowed to analyze your usage patterns and assuming your usage patterns have some consistency, Superfetch WILL improve the load time of apps.

Well, then explain why with it turned on, my HD light stays constant for several minutes when Vista loads, stops for awhile, and then repeats itself when I'm not even doing anything? I'm not imagining it. With it turned off, Vista loads and my HD access stops. I no longer see and hear HD grinding away. Like I said earlier, my programs all load almost instantly with it turned off. It is doing absolutely nothing for me except keep my HD active for no reason, and keeping useless services running.

Just Lou, do you have SP1 installed? I used to have the same problem... I never figured out what was causing it exactly, but SP1 made it go away. Also, how much RAM do you have?

EDIT: Also, Defender scans daily by default, which can contribute to disk thrashing.

I have SP1, 3GB, and a Penryn Processor. Defender is one of the first things I turned off. Since unloading all the gimmicks in Vista except Aero, my Vista systems run almost as fast as my XP systems.

Don't forget that Vista also defragments when idle unless it's turned off. That could contribute to some of the thrashing.

i'd just like to say that i have superfetch enabled, and my HD is not thrashed at all. the only time i see the HD light even blink is when i access documents or music or the like.

oh. rarely ever do i hear my HD either.
