Twice tonight my vista laptop kept turning itself on after I shut it down. It's spooky. What could be wrong? Also, while on it makes a squeaky noise every few minutes. Is it a virus? Is it becoming self-aware? I am worried.

I have had this laptop for over a year now. It had never done this until tonight. I am at a loss to explain this.

Well, you are keeping us in the dark by not telling us the make and configuration of your pet demon.

    No AC cable connected.

    It's an HP DV9207US.

It just happened again for the third time. This last time I switched the wireless button to off. Antivirus is not on automatic. I am going to turn it off again with battery removed. We will see what happens.

    1) Block the IR port, it sometimes gets an ON signal from other devices.

    2) If its a HP, its likely your Quick Launch buttons are just screwy. Its happened a few times in the past.

    3) Call Ghostbusters

It can't turn itself on without a power source. That's one solution. I don't know what an IR port is. I don't think this laptop has one. I will this disable quick launch buttons. Thanks.

Does Vista have the equivalent of XP's 'Scheduled Tasks'? Does your laptop have 'Wake on LAN'? Two possibilities...

Yeah, I had this problem awile ago on my HP. But I think it was due to my AC plugged in, so I just unplugged it and it stopped coming to life.

id edit out your email, and send it in a private message. not so much because every forum member can see it as I figure most of us would never use it for evil but there are forum bots that scan for email and well send you who knows what.

i think we have a limit on private messages, and thus why you did not opt for that option but still, maybe go post some more :p lots of junk in the off topic area :p
