I have been setting up my new notebook and noticed that Windows Vista all of a sudden started taking a really long time to load up. It seems that after the "microsoft corporation" loading page, the screen goes black.. there's no hard disk noise or anything.. for quite a while before it starts back up :( Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Mine takes ages to start as well - probably just a Vista thing...

I noticed that it seems to load slower when the battery is lower on power. This is my first notebook computer so I don't know much about power management.. could this be causing it to load slower at startup?

Well maybe you've got your Power Management set to lower power (speed of the laptop) when its' below certain % of battery level.

something similar happens with my laptop too and after 1 month of searching (15 installations, 16 complete restores, 3 upgrades, 23 different hp drivers...) the problem is still here:

so i made a clean installation (first tried ultimate and then business).

the same ( http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=6130 ) lag appeared (even before i started installing the updates).

the lag is from the time that the system icons (sound, battery, netowork) appear (on the tray) up til the screen blinks once. (the same thing happened with xp too but the lag was 2 sec only and not 15-20)

    &

HP Support couldn't give me a solution... :(
i'm thinking of going back to xp but i'll miss all the good vista staff (tags, search, aero, hybrid sleep, power managment, pen flicks etc...)

    i've found a solution :D :)

the problem was with the workstation service (as another member noticed), but if you stop this service you have no wlan.

so i installed VMware player 2.0 (which generates a fake ethernet connection) and the delay is gone ;)

I think what the OP might be experiencing is initial setup. If this is his/her first time to use Vista, it will take upwards from 30 min. to an hour, possibly longer, to get it set up. During that time, you might see a black screen with nothing on it.

Just let it keep doing its thing, don't turn it off during that time period.

Once you have it set up and are at the Windows desktop, you can then restart it and see the difference in speed. Although, with a new computer (and therein, a lot of bloatware), you usually will find that the startup time is longer than most. A clean install most of the time fixes that issue.
