Is there a plugin or a codec I must install to make the Media Center read lossless music formats such as FLAC's and Matroska video files (MKV's)?

Yes, you must install codecs to play either with Media Center/Player. Consider googling for 'vista codec pack'.

    Good luck ;)

I personally vouch for the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP).

I'd recommend K-Lite Codec Pack Full.

I use...I have always used K-Lite. Even now, when I have it installed the Media Center still doesn't automatically add FLAC/MKV's in the library when I point out the libraries it should "watch". This is a problem, because roughly 20% of my music library is FLAC (which is about 1k songs) and I almost always watch everything in HD (where MKV is the way to go).

PS: Until now I've always used foobar2k for music and the MPC for video files and I'll continue to use them. I'm asking this, because now that I have the HP remote control, allowing me to control my Media Center from a distance, it will be very useful if I can manage my whole library and vids, using it only.

Ahh, so its the program thats the problem then. It's not adding those file types as default for the program to play. There should be a setting in preferences for that or something. If not, I don't know, I don't use Media Center.

dunno, but "add mkv to media center" returns quite some nice results. for flac, not so much, but still some posts.

i'm starting with my media center setup in about 3 weeks or so, so i can't yet comment on it myself :)
