Mostly? - You get the HDD encryption (there are better free tools) and backup capability (better tools for less than the cost to upgrade to Ultimate) and Ultimate extras (which MS never really did do right). Oh, and you can Remote Desktop into an Ultimate system, which is probably the single thing I think is great if you need it.

    Worth it? - No.

You also get SUA, which is like Cygwin built in. If you use Cygwin it could be important.

Ofcourse in Ultima, you get ILP, interface language pack (or whatever microsoft calls it).

Like, i got a laptop with VISTA home permium in german pre-installed, unless i upgrade to ultima i cant change the language in which these popups are displayed...

infact i havent got a solution/tweaks till now of how to change the ILP to english on VISTA Home premium.

Yeah, you can. You just have to install from an US DVD or UK DVD.

Simply put, home premium is good for most. Ultimate has some special features that premium doesn't, but it is generally considered not worth the huge price increase. If you have tons of money though, get ultimate.

Depends on what you use it for. Do you need to join a domain? Do you need the automatic backup facilities provided by Business? If not, Premium is probably better.

Premium and Ultimate have windows media center + the usual boredom games. Say what you will, but all my friends here in school with Business are a little envious about those two things.

Prenium has Media Center + X360 connectivity
Business has full back up + MUI +remote desktop + better networking
Ultimate has all that + Ultimate Extras & bitlocker.

Upgrading is not really worth as the retail/OEM upgrade are very expensive. ORM versions are not that bad though ($110 HP, $140 business & $180 ultimate)

Tell your friends that they can install the games in the add/remove windows features section of add/remove programs in vista business.

    General:
For my Opinion...Windows Ultimate is great for power users and comp specialists. but for average users... It's too Expensive.
    Home Premium:
There is no Gpedit.msc, complete PC backup/restore... and many more. Anyway, There are some alternatives to that... like WinBubble (Security Registry settings), Acronis True Image (Backup) and so on...

I'm thinking maybe I can create a twin of Gpedit.msc...what do you think?

I'd opt for Vista Ultimate if I could.

That's one thing I admire about Apple, they keep their OSs to one version, one price.

Sometimes I wish Microsoft would do the same.

Microsoft can't do that, since they have Business customers too and those don't need a Media Center. But they could cut the prices in half.
Apple has only a small market share, with their business users geared towards entertainment...let's just say they don't care if they receive media center capabilities or not.

The single best thing of Ultimate, especially for someone who is always changing and tweaking their system, is Complete PC Backup where you can very simply Image your entire disk. Other things such as Dreamscenes and very increased file security are amusing but this seems to be the key for me.

    :p

Of course the new OSes as standalone are cheaper but the system's price is far far more expensive
