Thanks in advance for any advice given.

I attempted to transfer some files from my xp to my new hp pav.dv6000t.
It says the d drive is full, only 1% left and the c drive has 20% left.
    im defragmenting now.

How do i get rid of all the unnecessary crapware? Its not listed in the programs/feature to remove. I trashed the icons. Is there another way I can be sure the Vonage and aol and crap is gone?

I want to make room for firefox, spybot, and adaware se. Also-
On xp i used zone alarm pro for a firewall, what good firewall can I use on vista?

Thanks for any advice to this learning novice..

    Hi.

I'm not familiar with HP laptops, anyway but if you're harddrives are full, then defragmenting it isn't gonna help much surely? It's just re-arranging your file system and its not "making more free space" for you to install your apps.

Well again, not sure what is pre-installed with your HP, however I would take a stab and go through the Programs and Features menu in Vista to unistall anything that you don't want. Unfortunately I dont' know how you would remove some bloatware if they are not listed. As for me for instance, I have a Sony SZ and there's some pointless crap on it, which I can't get rid off

Firefox, spybot, ad-aware isn't gonna require huge amount of harddrive space to install. Oh and just a thought, laptops will always have a limitations on harddrive, so why not consider moving some of your large files to another medium such as an external harddrive?

I think Zone Alarm works with Vista? I remember reading it somewhere so you could just use that instead of searching for an alternative? :)

Remove programs you don't need under ADD/REMOVE. Afterwards, delete all internet cookies, temp files. Clean the registry. I use CCleaner a free program from download.com (cnet). It will clean broken files, shortcuts, registry entries. After you do the ADD/REMOVE delete the directories the programs were on. Sometimes a program uninstalls but still has remnants of the directory and files.

Your "D" drive is a partition where backup restore files are located. I too have a HP (dv2138). I believe that partition is about 10gb.
