i may bite on this. still a bit worried about my ram being not enough (1gb) on my compaq v3000
-
Haven't run it on any of my notebooks, but it seems to run fine (at least Beta 2 thru RC1 did, dling RC2 now) on my Athlon 64 desktop with 1GB of RAM.
-
thanks, and i guess a clean installation would be the best way to go as opposed to upgrade from XP?
32bit or 64bit? -
I just finished testing RC1. Let me know if RC2 is a BIG improvement.
I'm also Downloading RC2 now, but don't wanna install until I hear about any Major inprovements. It'll be Sweet if it SYNC with Outlook this time. -
I am downloading it now. I really want to see what Vista is like.
If I don't like it can I uninstall it? -
I don't believe Vista will let you "upgrade" from XP. Best (and safest) bet would probably to be to give it it's own partition. And I've been running the 32-bit version. 64-bit drivers are still a bit of a problem.
Will do. From the sounds of what Paul Thurott and others are saying, they managed to squash a LOT of bugs presented through feedback in the short time between RC1 5728 and RC2 5744. I'm just glad to be getting a peek at it seeing as how they were originally reporting that CPP members wouldn't get to preview it at all. -
You'll have to format and reinstall XP.
-
Then is it worth installing?
-
Thanks i will probably try to repartition my drive with a GPartedLive CD. How many gigs do you think minimum I need to install Vista and the bare essentials?
-
I forgot to ask, Will the Serial Key that Microsoft sent me for RC1 work with RC2?
-
MS says that for Vista Premium (RC installs Vista Ultimate) you need 15GB free.
-
I'll let you know, but I don't see why not. Mine has worked for me on the last 4 installs. I think it's good for the life of the pre-release cycle if I'm not mistaken. -
LIVEFRMNYC: My product key seem to activate just fine. Posting from my Vista box now. Little tip I stumbled across - if you plan on installing java try to get your hands on JRE 6.0 beta 2 rather than the current JRE 5.0 update 6. It seems to be a lot more stable.
-
how's it runnin? im burnin the vista iso as we speak.
-
well, in my case it is the ONLY version that would install with NO incompability under vista.
cheers ... -
Dont worry about 1GB RAM, it should run fine. As I said in the other thread. Even with 1GB RAM it is almost as fast as Win XP. I am currently d'loading 5744 and will do a upgrade from 5728.
-
so im runnin vista, but can't get aero (not shown in the appearance window) i'm using 96.33 drivers with modded inf from laptopvideo2go..
any ideas?
EDIT: nm i think i got it goin.. -
Can someone using Vista post some screen shots?
-
eveything seems to be workin okay, except that everytime i boot it tries to install drivers for nVidia network bus enumerator, but ends up saying it can't find the file. however, after i close that window, i go into device manager and nvidia network bus enumerator is there.
-
downloading already =]
-
There shouldnt be any errors but you can stop it from repoting that error at startup. I dont remember it exactly but there must be an option to disable that notification everytime it startsup. Ofcourse I would try uninstalling the existin driver and then reinstalling it again before blobking the message.
-
well that was fun.. after playin around with it for a little while, i deleted vista and am back to XP... i'll just wait til the final release, as i have no real use for having vista on a 20gig partition and i still feel comfortable with Xp pro at the time.
actually i might try my hand at installing linux on the partition i made for vista( a complete noob ) , as im feeling experimental today
is there a user-friendly linux that has good reported usage with the v3000 i wonder... im lookin at ubuntu at the moment. -
I had it at 68% downloaded clicking on the cancel tab.To many lab rats already in the vista cage doing microsofts work for them.I will also wait for the final release saving the headackes trying to find the sony drivers that work with the OS.
-
Thats exactly what I'm going to do
I was playing with RC1 on another parttition. I don't see any reason to have 2 different windows OS, UNLESS there was a major improvement in RC2 which I haven't heard of yet.
So I'm gonna try my luck with Ubuntu, heard nothing but good things about it and enjoyed it on live cd. I'm a tad bit scared of Grub tho. -
That's exactly why I have not yet installed it on my notebook. Way too many proprietary utilities and drivers that Sony has not yet offered support for in Vista.
On my desktop, however, it's running swimmingly. Haven't noticed too many changes in RC2 on the surface, but I'm sure there are some new performance and compatibility changes under the hood. I'm running an Athlon 64 3400 (2.4GHz), 1GB DDR400, SATA150 HDD, 6800GT and I scored a 4.2 out of 5 on Vista's performance scale. Not bad. That's up from a previous 3.8 on the betas. My overall memory usage when idle under Vista over that time has also gone down from a previous 70% to about 40%. Of course that could be due to the fact that there's not so much debugging code running in the background now with the RC versus Beta, but I'd certainly say it's coming along nicely. Of course it better be considering they're just weeks out from shipping. -
Here's one running Firefox 2 RC2 and WMP11.

yeh the only thing im afraid of is getting my broadcom (4311) wifi card to work. looking around the net, it seems like hit or miss, and im not too confident especially being a linux noob.
-
Have you tried it on live cd? My wireless works on Live cd perfectly, but maybe install is differ. I'll see.
I heard support is great for Ubuntu, so you can probally find a answer to a problem in there forums or just ask in here.
I'm a Novice-noob myself. -
Thanks for the picture.
I like the look of the task bar. -
hmm im trying for the 5th time to download vista omg its so slow 46.1 KB sec
-
Are you download VIA the download manager or browser?

thanks LIVEFRMNYC
-
is it gone already? i cant seem to find the RC2 page anymore.
-
Yeah, they did mention that it would be available only for a limited time. Guess they met their download target over the weekend.
-
I'm using RC2 right now, and so far I don't see a huge difference over RC1. One thing that I have noticed though is that my processor was hanging at about 5-15% at all times... definitely not right. Maybe it was just something wierd at the time... it is Windows after all.
-
any particular moment, or was it just random?
i am on rc2 for the past 4 days now, definitively an improvement over rc1.
IE7 does not hang anymore, and is running neck.in.neck with ff-rc2, if not faster in some instances, still it is a beta version, so it is hard to come to any concrete conclusion at the moment
i like the way rc2 is handling broadband, self-performance-adjustment, clever. but i do miss the personal control over the tcp/ip options
there is also more compatibility when calling xp apps over from xp.partition, did not have to go to so many security check/admin confirmation as in rc1
cheers ... -
I thought RC1 was boderline overkill. -
ditto, that is why it is such an improvement in rc2
cheers ... -
It was all the time. I kept task manager open and watched it, and it just sat there at 5-15% on the CPU the whole time. All I had open was IE7. Maybe it was cause I had just installed avast! or something. I'll look at it again the next time I'm in Vista.
-
I have vista downloaded. When/if I install it will it wipe my hard drive clean or will I still have all my programs and documents?
-
There is an "Upgrade" option during setup, but it has always been greyed out for me (for whatever reason). I just kept doing a reformat, which of course wipes out XP and all old data.
-
If it doesn't show me the upgrade option I probably wont do it then.
-
Do you want to upgrade from Win XP or do you want to install it one a separate partition. If you want to upgrade from Win XP, then you will need to start Wn XP and then insert the disc rather than booting from the Vista DVD. But I would recommend installing it on a separate partiton. This way you can try Vista safely as well as keep your Win XP partition. You can use a Linux live CD - ubuntu for example which will alloiw you to partition the HDD without reformating Windows/losing your data. It is safe to do this, but I would definately keep a backup of your data just in case.
-
I just want to try Vista out.
What is a good partitioning program besides ubuntu?
