Hi all, just wondering if it is possible to keep all of my files and everything on my computer but write all of the vista files back to my laptop as I have some major slowing problems on my laptop sometimes its fast others it's really slow, im guessing somewhere is a driver conflict and wanted to try and re install vista over the current one.

Does anyone know if this is possibe?

    Thank you lots

You could install Vista to another directory say Windows2 and everything else would be left alone. It is not the best practice however. The best way to accomplish this would be to have all of your data on another partition and just reinstall your OS partition.

The above suggested repair is a way - but, it can mess up things in terms of drivers, utilities etc. at least it did for me on my Vaio.

What I would recommend is getting an external HDD copy all files over and start either from scratch or a recovery.

Else, if Vista is slow, defragment it over night, clean out temp files with CCleaner and the Windows tool (get rid of shadow copies too).

Maybe do a registry clena with CCleaner - BUT - read every entry before yout tick it, use at own risk!

Search for a thread by ScuderiaCon... (sorry don't know the rest of the top of the head) - a senior forum member - about defragmenting boot files, do this too.

I did the above on my Vaio - I got a shock when Firefox suddenly opened instantly (Opera user nowadays).

Maybe leave your laptop on overnight, so it idles and organizes itself.
Oh, and defragment without the AV or useless processes (and without Internet to be safe)

Try this first - it may help.

You might take a shot doing this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212

It has worked for me when I had several issues with the O/S.

Another one that helped was CHKDSK.

Vista does not offer the repair function like XP. About all that you can do is restore or re-install.

Polish? (The coat of arms? - I've got a family link, my mother :D)

    On topic:
You say Vista has not got a repair function - I messed up a Sony System restore (god knows how... after an instal too!!)
And I used the restore discs to repair (!!) Vista.

    I couldn't imagine this being a Sony specific add-on.

Windows should be laid out like linux whereas all your personal settings and data could be kept in a separate partition, thereby allowing a clean install of the OS without losing data or settings.

It already can, you just have to do that before you start putting everything on your computer.

Did you look within Vista once its installed, or did you boot from the Windows Disc?

If I remember correctly you have to boot from the Windows Disc
