Anyone else encountered this error when installing the new SP1? I did not participate in any of the Beta tests nor did I hack my registry to get SP1. All I did was update a couple drivers as detailed here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3128253&highlight=saga#post3128253

About a month ago I also had trouble with the update KB937287 (a prerequisite of SP1.) I ended up installing it with the standalone installer and that went ok.

Now I cannot get SP1 to install no matter what I try. I've tried WU and I've tried the 700MB standalone installer for 64-bit. I've already looked here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366/
    http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2579217&SiteID=17

What I have tried with new installs after each step:
    - Rebooting
    - Disabling my virus protection
    - The MS memory test
    - The MS file system check

Here's a screenshot of the error:

I'm in the middle of trying the same thing (x3100 driver update from intel.com through .zip file, then SP1 install from Windows Update) on my Dell Latitude D630, so I'll let you know how it goes.

EDIT: ok, I'm back... and using SP1. Sorry, I forgot to mention I have 32-bit Vista. Anyway... I did get a bluescreen on stage 3, but it just rebooted and did that part over again and now it's all installed and working.

So far there are no solutions for the 0x80070059 problem, but there are some explanations:

    I got that from here:

I'm getting the same problem, too! (not sure if it's the same error code, though)

I also have a problem with Internet Explorer not opening, and the Virtual PC Console not showing up

I opened a ticket for this issue with Microsoft. I tried their installation approach and it made no difference but maybe it will work for you. I will update this thread once the issue is resolved.

Microsoft finally came through with a "solution":

I did all of this, and here was the time consumed:
Vista reinstall with upgrade mode: 2 hours
    SP1 install: 1 hour
Download all drivers, re-tweak everything: 3 hours

    Pros:
    - SP1 did eventually install without further trouble.
    - All existing software is still indeed in place and registry was intact.

    Cons:
    - Very long process
    - My Vista activation was removed!! I could not use my Lenovo activation code backup disk because Vista wouldn't even let me log in. I called the MS toll free number and went through activation using the sticker on the bottom of my laptop.
    - Must download all drivers that are obsolete (maybe 50%)
    - All changes made in services.msc are lost, and so are tweaks (eg. disable USB wakeup, TMM, etc.)

I glad the ordeal is over, at least until SP2 comes out! :D
