Anybody know the exact date? I use XP Pro and would probably switch to Vista after SP1.

A date hasn't been released yet, and anything you read on the internet is pure speculation at this point.

I dont think there is ever an exact date with Microsoft. Things are ready when they're ready. If you're waiting for an official date, you can bet that a pre-release version will come out before the date you're looking for, as with most MS products. Notably, XP SP2, which I ordered weeks on CD before MS started releasing it on their Windows Update platform.

Word on the street is that it is slated toward a late '07 to early '08.

Which is far too late in the opinion of many. But if they're going to release it, they better do it right.

I'm hearing October of 2007 is the 'rumored' date. I'd still avoid Vista though until others have tested it.

I'd stick with XP as long as you can, because there really is no reason to switch if everything you have works now. There are a lot of people that have no issues with Vista, but there are quite a few (myself included) that had so many issues they go back.

My 1520 came with Vista and I reverted like many to XP. I just really like the look of the Aero and stuff but find that Stylexp and WindowBlinds still doesn't look as clean as Vista. I guess I just have to wait for however long M$ needs.

It's only been recently confirmed by MS that SP1 for Vista even exists. No date has been set. So, as Tritium said, it's speculative at this point. Rumors are now early 2008.

On a related note, SP3 for XP has been confirmed and is rumored to be released late 07 or early 08.

I've heard and read a lot of rumors. I read about Vista SP1 beta being due out in July and expected date for SP1 sometime in September, or perhaps that was beta 2. I also read that Microsoft said "sometime later this year," implying a date around the holiday season. Now it appears that SP1 will come out around the same time as Windows Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008, which is early 2008.

However most of the fixes and patches for SP1 are not security flaws, but rather they are just improvements in performance, reliability, and compatibility. Recently a leak of two updates, also rumored to be part of SP1, were for just that. I downloaded and installed them and noticed quite a difference.

If its going to be delayed further, at least it will come out complete.

I got a disc with XP SP2 for my old PC back when I was on dial up and DLing the SP would have been a bit unreasonable. I was very pleased with the timeliness of the delivery.

That reminds me of the time I was installing SP4 for Windows 2000 when I had dial-up... nobody called me for days!
