How come SP1 is 434 MB and SP2 is only 348 MB?? This sound so strange? I thought SP2 would be much much bigger????

Especially if you are installing SP2 from a system which does not include SP1, how does this work?

You need to install SP1 before installing SP2 :D

Yes, you need SP1 before you can install SP2.

    32 Bit-343.9 MB
    64 Bit-567.3 MB

Those are the sizes for me at least.

Not with Vista. You do need SP1 before SP2 will install. It's not a matter of SP2 not showing up on Windows Update if you don't have SP1 installed either. Standalone (network) installation packages are the same.

yep, it depends. some sp do deep software changes, like kernel updates and such. those normally are always then standalone, and not integrated together.

this was the case for xp sp1 i think, and is the case for vista sp1.

we'll see what vista sp3 will bring. maybe that will be fused, maybe that won't be fused. the great thing i see so far from vista is, most people are more or less uptodate => most won't need a full installer.

for reinstallations, you don't want a full installer with sp1, 2, 3 etc in one. you want a disk with all in it. and that's another topic anyways :)

i guess in half a year maybe? currently, the sps are at around a 1year schedule and most likely will continue to so so as they're in parallel with the server code nowadays, and there is a constant smooth os update schedule the default since long time.

First service pack will always be big, mainly because after the software is released, all the major bugs, glitches, fixes and security hole reports will pile up left to right.

what he was wondering is, how can sp2 be smaller than sp1, if it contains sp1.

    simple answer: it doesn't :)

and it doesn't make sense to combine them. it would just mean more to download. the ones that need both can download both, the ones that don't (huge majority) only download the new one.

what i'd love is to be able to freely download the iso with all integraded to create an install disk. would be nice from microsoft.

yes, if it's the same one you get when buying vista in a shop and getting a disk with sp2 integrated, then yes.

it would be nice to have open access to that. i know on MSDN accounts and such, one can download it.

have to get my hands on that iso :) you don't want to share, do you? :)

Download vLite and integrate the service pack and even drivers, it works exactly like a real ms disc. Thats what i did for SP1.

I have a habit of doing a clean install every service pack.

A few things which I CBF to look for right now won't work if you use vLite to slipstream a service pack to your Windows Vista. MS advises against it.

MS is not against Vlite, but only against stripping down components of the OS during Vliting.

You can create your own customized image with MS provided tools. Look up "Desktop Deployment" on MS's web site.

Vista SP3 will be released sometime after Windows 7. That's right, there will be a real SP3 for Vista.
