    As my topic stated, is it? I would like to know so I don't have to feel bad about getting a laptop with Vista right now and start thinking I will be outdated by June 2009 when Windows 7 comes out.

    How many times do people have to ask this? Vista SP2 is completely distinct from Win 7. Buy your laptop and feel bad in June 2009.

    Win7 is a whole new OS based on Vista. Two separate products.

    No, your computer isn't going to just quit working when a new OS arrives. Just ask all the people running the seven year old Windows XP.

    Actually, Vista SP2 is probably going to be the same kernel as Windows 7. The difference is that Windows 7 will also include improvements to the UI and changes to bundled apps in addition to the kernel changes.

    Vista post SP1 is an excellent OS. If you don't think it is much improved over XP you most likely have never tried it with SP1 or you have messed with your computer so much that no OS could possibly be stable on it.

    Win 7 is still a distinct product - i.e. Win 7 is not Vista SP2 is not Win 7.

    I have read somewhere that Windows 7 is going to be a whole new OS but Microsoft are not going to change the major product number from vista for compatitibility reasons. So windows 7 will not be windows v7 like windows vista was v6. Windows 7 will be V6.1

    It'll be a new number, that has nothingto do with the compatibility. The current builds are 6.x. For Windows 7 the system requirements are going to be the same as Vista.

    Windows 7 build based on windows vista. So honestly, it's not totally new OS. I agree with member above who said windows version 6.1

    Then you're both wrong.

    XP = WinVer5.1
    Vista = WinVer6
    Win7 = WinVer7

    Microsoft have released that Windows 7 will have the Vista Version number 6.2 and not 7.1 for compatibility issues...
