I had desktop search 4.0 installed for a while. And unfortunafely i cant take advantange of the bluetooth feature pack due to my bluetooth adapter not working with anything beside bluesoleil or the horrendous toshiba bluetooth stack. Other than the vista pre release thing stamped on the lower right corner of my screen, so far so good.

Sadly the only fix that I really needed (randomly resetting folder views) is not present in SP2. Hope they do something about it sooner or later, as the supposed registry fixes that I found didn't help at all. :(

Didn't see much change in terms of performance, so I just uninstalled it for now. Going to wait until the final release.

Vista is chaos with that. SP2, as you well put it, did not fix that. One folder is detail, the other is large icons, the other is yadda yadda. I tried everything to make Vista use details for all folders. I gave up. So far Sp2 is not aimed for that :p.

Do a Windows Help Search "Folders view", or open the "Organize" menu at the top of an open folder, Click "Folder & Search Options", View Tab, Uncheck "Remember each folders view settings". This will allow you to then set a global view.

You can also restore defaults or set each folder view independently, set classic view, and many other things in "Folders View" settings.

Been there, done that. Even modified the registry. Nothing works, on reboot it resets and Vista displays the way it pleases. Anywho, back to SP2.

Well, it does seperate the way different file types are displayed, media versus data files, etc, but I thought you could make them all display the same if you wanted too. Not having files of similar type display differently across folders myself but have not tried to set media files to display the same way as data files yet.

Just reset media folders to use "Detail View" and then rebooted. Everything stayed set and is displaying in detail view now.

Is that feature better implemented in x64 than on x86? I use x86.

I really don't know. I've only been on Vista for a couple of months, and only the x64 version. Went from Home Premium to Ultimate right away. Can't say as I have had any problems with either of these whatsoever. I've been following your plight trying to help/duplicate your situation(s) but have not been able to do so.

I just reset to default folder views and rebooted again. All data files are displaying in Detail view and all media is using either Icons or Thumbnails. Seems I can set it anyway I want and it will stay.

On x86 it does not save. I just rebooted and some folders are details some are large icons.

Well, maybe it is an x86 bug. The Windows help search I did on Folders View suggested that some view types may hinder system performance. Perhaps there is a conflict in x86.

Nope, it's present in Vista Ultimate x64 as well. It stays fine for a few weeks after a clean install, but then starts resetting at random intervals and only some folders. For instance all the folders on my external hard drive save just fine, but "Computer", "My Documents", and "Control Panel" are affected. I wouldn't mind making a batch file to restore them to the way I want them to be displayed every once in a while, but haven't had time to look into if it's actually possible.

I have SP2 and windows installed updates. It seems that the question we've all asked is answered: SP2 does not stop Vista updates.

but what are those updates? Certainly, you would still want any internet explorer, media center, etc updates. Also, updates to sp2 would quite naturally be included. Microsoft is not going to leave exploits to the OS open just because it is a beta

That's funny that they just didn't include the updates in a new build. Maybe they did both.

well, i tried getting the patch off of the Microsoft site, to receive the SP2 beta in Windows Update and no dice; each time i try to download, i have no option to run, only "open" or "save", both of which ask me which program i want to "open" the file with, turns out i dont have any program that will open it...what's the deal? Should'nt i just be able to run it to apply the registry change?

that's to keep you from having to uninstall the old build and install the newest one each and every time they come up with an update

    Isn't Vista SP2 really Windows 7?

dbam is right from what I've read.

Let me try to sum it up a bit.

Windows 7 was completely optimized - I believe people have seen it being faster than XP in some cases, definitely faster than Vista though.

In contrast, some people have seen no visible improvement with Vista SP2.
    _____
Windows 7 is a rework of Vista based on the same Kernel - a lot got refined.

SP2 for Vista is just tidying up issues.

This means also - WIndows 7 starts from sratch on your computer - while SP2 is an add on trying to rectify existing faults.

Its like putting a modern engine into an oldtime - go beyond a limit and it tears itself apart - that's Vista.
Windows 7 is the new car with the new engine.

(old car, say Ford Model T, engine, say roughly 600bhp Maybach engine)

Some weird issues happening with SP2 on my U6.

    1. Battery meter went away twice. Had to uninstall the ACPI thingie ma bob twice.
    2. Realtek Sound icon goes away and comes back when it pleases.
    3. Internet/Lan icons fail to show up sometimes.

For problem 2 and 3 reboot does the trick.

Vista SP2 RC is working very well for me. Boot times are a little quicker, and overall the experience is better. File copy times are down as well, a major plus for me.

When Microsoft is good and ready. So far no SPECIFIC date has been set. RC versions of SP2 are floating about so it should not be too much longer. Any guess would be just that, a guess.

I guess the next logical reply to that would be then what's been the average time for MS when the RC goes out the door to the actual release getting out?

    I know, I know...it's still a guess. I'm just asking it a different way. :p

As usual, do a full backup b4 upgrading to SP2...just came back from a nasty screwup with an Acer Aspire and SP1.

So far the SP2 seems to be quite good.
