Check out this article. It looks like Vista will get its first service pack in October or November. So it looks like that's when I'll upgrade if my "free upgrade" ever arrives.

Just to clarify, this was ALWAYS the plan. Vista SP1 will release at the same time as Windows Server 2007, and will bring Vista up to the Server 2007 codebase.
Essentially, when beta testing Vista (Longhorn), the server and client releases were shipped together and were the same build number. The difference became at Vista RC-stage, when Server went to Beta 3 stage. Still the same build, but while Vista moved toward wrapping up and shipping, Server continued development and testing for it's release this fall. When that release ships, Vista SP1 will ship at the same time, making it the same version as the more tested Server release. That's also why there's not a real Vista SP1 beta program... the testing is being done on Server 2007, and there will likely be a mini-beta to test the update process nearer to the release. -

And that is when I might upgrade to Vista.

that is all & good from m$, but the missing link is always this - what with the device drivers?
there is no garantie that SP1 would include "current" needed/missing drivers (or resolve the "drivers" compatibility issue) until the laptop manufacturer/seller gets on their derriere and make the drivers available

qhn -- very true. Although I am biased (was a Vista beta-tester) the VAST MAJORITY of "problems" with Vista are due to drivers. That is still the main problem with switching to Vista for many people -- and it's not something that SP1 will fix... though hopefully manufacturer's will have gotten better drivers out by then.
The other problem plaguing Vista right now is UAC, which many of us complained about all throughout the beta. Finally, way too late, Microsoft realized there was a problem, and tried to "fix" it at the last second, as well as allowing users to turn it off for individual accounts. The "fix" has numerous problems and is still annoying (and really wasn't thoroughly tested given the late date of the fix), and disabling it altogether, while making for a less agrivating experience, causes problems of its own (some installers like Adobe Reader 8 have issues with UAC turned off, and trying to install shared printers with UAC off usually doesn't work at all). Unfortunately, that's what happens when you try to change a major feature at the last minute. SP1 will hopefully fix that. -
yeah., i would like to see issues with UAC and "outbound" firewall connections implemented in SP1 as well, that it would be a great step forward
dont get me wrong, i use vista pretty much 80% of the time at the moment - just want to point out that many users r expecting SP1 to fix the issues with driver incompatibilities, and that it wont be necessarily so :-(

I kinda wish I had stayed in the beta through the Server release to see what was getting fixed for Vista SP1, but after spending so much time with Vista and Office 2007, I needed a bit of a break. Plus, I'm working on a couple of other betas that would have made testing out another server OS tough.
But, yeah, I've noticed a lot of people who seem to think the Service Pack will somehow fix issues with third party drivers. Generally, I don't bother commenting, since by the time SP1 ships, any self-respecting hardware company had BETTER have decent Vista drivers. -
Does anyone know if this will dramatically increase speeds of boot time and fix other issues such as the turbo memory? Thanks
-
They [Microsoft] claim it addresses the Turbo Memory issue, but I doubt it will increase boot speeds - let alone dramatically. =/

Thanks for you responses...the most important thing may be the turbo memory fix...that was supposed to be a 'big' thing from intel...and it can only be used properly with vista...so I guess it's a manufacturers and vista issue combined
Turbo memory causes BSOD's...and in fact slows boot times for many people..hopefully they can get it working how they intended to -

does UAC have ''remember me'' options if not thats what i want to see in SP1
