I'd like this poll to be answered only by people that have tried both Win XP and Win Vista Sp1.
Which OS do you prefer? Considering performance, friendliness, etc. (and independently of which is the newest system or what is in fashion today). Objectively please.
    Thanks.

xp sp2 will still be faster after vista sp1...
not to mention that xp sp3 will come out at about the same time increasing xp speed by 10%...
if you want performance, go with xp for now.

considering friendliness i would also say xp by a good margin.

new operating system has steep troubles vs. older mature stable operating system. you will spend more time fixing problems that come up in vista than you will in xp. simple as that.

vista does look better, and has more doors locked out of the box. however, thats not to say that xp cannot be secured or considered secure, and vista should definitely not be considered secure out of the box anyway.

both need antivirus, antispyware, firewall, etc.

    ----

the vista interface is better and sleeker than xp. i personally don't care that much about the sleekness of the desktop and windows in windows, as i only use windows for gaming and thus the xp interface is mostly absent from what i deal with. i'll totally admit that performance and stability in windows are my highest concerns. However, if you are the type that multitasks in windows (tons of windows and applications open), you might find that vista in the end is more usable for you.

Agreed, now Vista doesn't just look good, feels good too. There are still strong Vista haters with very strong feelings and loud opinions (DRM being one point I can agree with).

how are you supposed to "objectively" critique something as abstract as "friendliness" and "fashion" ?

you need to brush up on your definitions

My vote is for Vista; the more I use it, the more I'm starting to like it.

After trying Vista Ultimate for nearly 3 months, I'd go back to XP. Much faster and simpler.
For security, I remember there was an article that says Vista is no better than XP.

I'll stick with XP since Vista uses too much system resources for my tastes. lower fps in games and stuff too, although I do admit that I'll switch over once it's more updated since I like the nice interface.

I'm with you! I'm getting sick of these threads. Am I the only one that remembers the evolution through Windows 3.11, NT, 95, 98, 98SE, etc etc?? It's the same old broken record with the release of every new OS. Eventually everyone will abandon XP and get ready for the next round of complaints against Vienna. I have to say that this is the most like the jump to 95 in terms of complaints.

Wrong! Suggest you check your facts instead of just remembering "... an article" with twisted data. Vista continues to have less vulnerabilities than XP. What is true, however, is that both Vista and XP are pretty much equally vulnerable to spyware and viruses, both of which depend on the AV/spyware protection utilized (pretty obvious here why this is --- the majority of this is initiated by the user anyhow).

I just want opinions based not on hate for one OS or another, nor opinions based on what only look good.
ie. it is fairly objective that XP is more friendly than Win98. Same with Vista vs XP?
I also would like opinions that are not based on: ie, Because I don't want to try Vista for longer, or on the other hand, because I already payed for Vista so I better like it.

For instance, After SP1, switching from Win 98 to XP WAS WORTHY. What I wonder is, now that Vista SP1 is out, is it AS WORTHY to switch to it.

Come on, Sp1 just came out, now people can judge Vista better than in the other polls.

Of course it's a bit strange at the beggining but I find Vista (as office 2007) way simplier to use than XP / Older office.

Vista has more embedded security like Bitdefender out of the box and a better firewall that doesn't screw anything but the real "more secure" is more for the X64 version I think.

XP has better in game FPS but only if you use FPS counter, you won't see a difference otherwise most of the time.
