Ok now....everybody knows of my Tweaking and Clean Install threads (in sig block) which I hope has helped many out.
I am curious, however, as to what kind of start times we all have. This became my curiosity with a recent post of a member who stated he could not get it below the minute mark; this amazed me.
Ok...now to standardize the procedure....
The start time begins at the press of the start button and is complete once all activity is complete on your desktop.
For instance, if, like I, you have toys such as sidebar, object dock and AVG Antivirus starting at startup, so be it.
For me, my last activity is the confirmation of my internet. My regular time is still around 27 seconds with my ssd.
To confirm however, if you have password and logging, it does not qualify as start button until logon screen. Logging must be shut off and the entire process monitored.
Thank you all in advance and lets see where we are.
Oh... also for those with slower start times, we can use this thread to assist if you like but, if you havent followed the Tweaking Guide or considered a Clean Install of your system, be ready for the lash backs (lol).

Mine does it in 40-50 seconds....
With my 5400 rpm harddrive.
I'm too lazy to follow your guide -

Okay, who voted 20-25 seconds!?!?!?!?
-
mines 50-1min. I had a question for u Les, but I guess you never saw i in your tweak thread.
Two questions.
Tweak #22- Reduce or Eliminate the Size of Your Disk Cache
What are the pros and cons of this? I'm not quite sure what this does and how it boost performance and give you back disk space.
Tweak #6-Disable Vista Search Indexing
I have the unchecked part already done.
My question pertains to this:1. Click on start/run and type in 'MSConfig' and hit ok;
2. Click on Services tab and find Windows Search
3. Uncheck/Apply and Ok...Your done!!!
I did both msconfig and unchecked windows search and went to services.msc and disabled windows search. Same thing?
I saw a vista pc on youtube i think an asus pc boot up in 25 seconds. that green bar went by one time and it loaded, i was like wtf. my green bar passes 6-7 times. ;[ -
I have another question. I can get to my desktop and have everything startup(rocketdock, miniMIZE and rainmeter in less than a minute, but once my desktop shows, my ram usage is at 36%, but if I let it sit for 20-30 seconds, it drops down to 26%. that still counts as under a minute right?
-
RE: the 20-25 seconds...can I ask a Mod to amend so that the poll identifies who voted where? That should give that person credit which is due.
McGrady:
If you have 4Gb ram, it is probably very advantageous to eliminate your disk cache or page file completely. This is what I and many others have found. The reason is, even when you reduce it (with 4Gb), you are not using the ram to its full potential. My system had a definite speed increase after eliminating pagefile and shutting down the cache. This also saved me about 4Gb HD space and eliminated the background caching hd/ssd activity (which is the cause of slowing).
If you have 2Gb (as I did), I would then suggest gradually reducing it to regain some of your hard drive space back. Try something like 600 min 1200 max if your not a gamer or don't have 40 windows opened all the time.
Don't be afraid to eliminate or shut it down completely if your not a big user of ram demanding applications. Thats why the system has a check box to shut off the page file.
If you have adverse effects...turn it back on.
My final thought regarding the cache though is, if you are going to play with the cache, reduce it gradually until your comfortable with where you are.
Regarding Search Indexing...yup.
EDIT: Yes... we don't care about where the ram usage meter is, just that the desktop is complete and useable. -
What do you suggest with 3gb ram? That's what I have.
-
I don't know what your activities are and usage...reduce a bit at a time.
-
Tested on my iMac running Vista Business 32-bit via Boot Camp: 53 seconds
-
I get 50secs-1 min.
-
Reduce as in change the "Custom Size" to 600 min and 1200 max?
And reduce as in 500 and 1100?
I game...but not those intense games. Free online games such as KartRider and GunBound. I probably definitely don't use no more than 70% ram.
EDIT: And why when my comp. starts up its at 36% ram usage, and when I let it sit it goes to 26%. I check processes and nothing goes away, the ram just drops. Thanks. -
30+- seconds to get to log on screen. maybe anotehr 30 seconds+-or less to completely load everything. SP1 has slowed it down a little, the desktop loading is slightly different now
RMclock using astiv driver bypass waits for everything to load first. I think this is whats slowing me down.
Before it was 30seconds to login screen + 15 seconds to completely load desktop -
Yup...Customize...
If you ever get daring, shut 'er off completely and see where you fare. -
Startup? I remember doing that a few times for updates to Windows...
Otherwise I just hibernate and resume. -
-
if i change to 600 and 1200, should i be lookin at ram usage and expect it to go down? -
mine is about 30 seconds to login screen
-
I get 50secs - 1min. I didn't apply any of the tweaks listed. I did disable some WMP services.
-
I think the voting for 20-25 secs is highly overrated.
-
30-35 seconds, baby.
Ok, so I hardly have any programs installed. -
Around 25-30 seconds to login, with all programs loaded (55 processes) takes around 55-70 seconds, then for the Readyboost cache to load takes it up to around 100-120 seconds. In short, around 2 minutes general startup time till harddrive activity ceases.

my laptop starts in 45-55 seconds, I'm very satisfied with this.
But I have a question, is there anyway that I can speed up the time for BIOS to load?
my laptop takes 20-25 seconds to load BIOS, and only 15 seconds to load Vista,
I'm pleased with the time vista used, but want to find some ways to speed up the BIOS.
I have toshiba A135, with a phoenix BIOS. -
35-40
Wonder when computers can insta-boot. -
Just got my Inspiron 1525 w/ 3GB RAM. After a few hours of tweaking, startup time is about 50 seconds.
Not bad. -
Awe. You don't have a 15-20 second option. I am not joking. From pressing my power button to the Vista logon screen is about 15 seconds or so. Once I log in, my desktop is ready to use in 5 seconds. The only item that takes a bit to load is Object Dock and that's because of all the icons and the settings I've done.

I take the longest time required. which is 1 min and 5 seconds
Actually the boot time took the 1min and the start up time of 5 seconds.
(Although sometimes my boot time is about 30-35 seconds, when my computer has only a few things that run at boot time)
I'll post again when I reformatted my computer -

Vista's startup times have always been crap.... hence their development of the Sleep function.
Mine varies from 1:30 to 2 full minutes on a 200GB 4200RPM drive. -
key # 4200rpm.......

My notebook is a G1S.
Specs:
CPU - T7500
RAM - 2 GB (two sticks)
Graphics - 8600gt (stock)
OS - Vista SP1 (x86)
My fast bootup could be because my last reinstall was about 1.5 months ago. -
ive got 50-1min with a clean install and after following your guide
ive got vista ultimate 32 Bit and the hardware in my sig -
I used to care about start-up time alot, like just shaving a few seconds off matters, but not anymore especially if my laptop is on AC. I still tweaks start up setting for optimal performance, however, now I will just let it boot and go do something else and return with it all loaded, this way when you start that first application with it responding much faster.
I did vote though, 50 sec - 1 minutes after taking off the time for bootmgr, technically, it should be 1 min + because I have the boot manager and that takes time. -
Need some help, guys. I've followed the Tweak thread (mostly), and just did a defrag of the boot files with the program provided (more of a command line). But I'm getting a minute and something from pushing the button to the log in screen. What else can I do? Oh, and I'm running Vista SP1.

i used to have 30-35 sec startup time with mcafee running and sidebar after tweaking... now i'm taking longer bcuase of custominzing desktop for looks =( still its <1min.
shutdown time i still 10-15 secs tho! -
51 Seconds... with customized desktop and a few "unneeded" visual apps.
-
30-40 seconds. My system is not all new, but it works good for my graphic design needs. I don't like to install too many programs, and in the startup I only have RocketDock, Windows Sidebar, Avast Antivirus, Wacom tablet driver, Windows Defender and something about the Media Center (not remember the process).
My system:
HP Pavilion dv8320us, Intel Centrino Duo 1.6 Ghz T2050, 2 Gb RAM, nVidia GeForce Go 7600 Graphics Card, HDD 160 Gb (2 x 80), 4 GB USB drive SanDisk with ReadyBoost. -
well I see most times are under a min. I guess vista's not THAT slow after all
-
if you get a new laptop and find vista slow. its most likely because of the bloatware.
2-3min startup time, thats ridiculous -
I got mine down to 40 seconds.
-
Exxxcelllent!!!! McLuvin...I mean McGrady.
-
Fresh install + some optimization on my desktop = 36 seconds to ultimate w/ SP1. I love that the desktop is actually responsive once it loads (thanks quad core!). Down from 49. The 49 was with an old "untouched" vanilla home premium install and most likely a fragmented hdd.

I have an extremely powerful laptop, with two Hitachi 7K200's in raid 0, and I cannot get my system to start up faster than 1 minute 5 seconds. (this is on XP)
I am referring to my Voodoo.
(Time measured = press of power button, to when all of the apps in the taskbar are fully loaded and the cpu usage drops to less than 5%)
The first problem is that it takes 28 seconds to get through the raid manager in the bios. Its really annoying, waiting 28 seconds for the bios to boot.
Once the bios boots, the xp splash screen loads, and the bar goes by three times.
Then 10 seconds after this splash screen loads, the windows background is shown.
It takes about 7-10 seconds for CPU Rightmark and Riva Tuner to post, which is common on all of my laptops.
I wish there was a way which I can get the bios to boot faster.
On most laptops, it takes less than 3 seconds to boot the bios, but I have to wait 28 seconds.
K-TRON -
i think i got the lowest startup time with NO clean install
8) -
my bios take forever to load too :/
-
Use the Quick Boot feature in the BIOS?
-
Meh, wish this were a public poll. Hate to say it but a public poll would discourage *ehem*dishonesty*ehem*. Sorry, had to say it
Anyway, on topic, I'm not using Vista so I didn't vote. I have a password so I don't get to measure my time accurately. I'll try to remove my password and measure my boot time... when I don't feel completely lazyBut I'd guess it would be around at least a minute. I do have lots of things at startup -- AV & FW [of course], ObjectDock, Windows Defender, WordWeb, and that Microsoft Office thingy [that has a flag as an icon -- I'm guessing it's Office's quick launch?].
LOL for someone lazy I sure do type a lot -
