Hey Guys,
I've had 3 clean installs of Vista, and initially I have great startup times (~40-45s...perhaps I should have faster with my specs?). After Les' tweaks everything is honky dorey. But after installing software here and there, my boot-time gets gross...especially after loading programs at work.
I thought I'd query the field for your Vista boot-times and a profile of which software you have loaded. In this way, we could perhaps narrow down potential programs that increase boot-time. It could either be a list format, or maybe it would be easier to take screenshots of the "Programs and Features" folder.
Here goes nothing!
My Boot-Time: ~ 1:30

And your programs...?

...really really wierd, the link to my photo keep dissappearing...sorry, I'll fix it.

Boot time is about 40 seconds, last reformatted about 1 month ago. I haven't done any tweaking, it really hasn't done anything for me. About 55-60 processes on startup.
Computer specs in siggy (120GB 5400rpm). -
Programs Installed SmoothTofu?

I have a Vostro 1500 with a 2.5 Ghz and the rest is pretty much the same and my boot up time is 32 seconds.

Are you measuring after POST or when you press the power button? Some laptops/pc's have longer startup routines than other's, which isn't a result of Windows at all.
-
It's pretty obvious what the problem is. You have AVG+Microsoft Office+Quicktime. AVG and Quicktime like to load themselves at bootup like its nobody's business and Microsoft Office installs like 200 fonts on your system that has to get loaded at boot time.
-
Well if he followed Les' guide he should have disabled the startup programs in MSconfig. So that shouldn't be a problem...besides the fonts.
-
Programs installed doesnt exactly mean longer boot times, unless the program actually has a service/process or registry key to load up on startup
Heres mine on video:

I didnt swipe my finger straight away at login. MSN messenger is the last thing that loads which is 1:04. So roughly 1 minute till my system is completely up and running at full
I have alot of programs installed, i wont bother writing them all down. I have exactly 64 processes on startup -
@bmwm...
Programs? If you can get 32s from powerbutton to desktop, with a 5400 RPM, that's sweet...that's what I'm shooting for. -
Oh my God!!!!! Can you install anything else on there?
A previous responder is dead on. You have to watch for programs which load on start. Office is one good example. It loads from the boot file AND the start folder in your menu. Get rid of them both as they are not needed. If you want to use Office, just click the application.
I have always wondered this about so many programs. Why do they have functions that start when Im not using them. Quicktime...same same... MSN Messenger....same same...
There are tons. Tackle the programs that are starting right off and you will find your problem Im sure.
You may also wonder if you deleted a program and it left ghost registry entries that hang in seeking the executable file. This use to always happen with me and Dells old DVD player/burning program...I cant remember the name. -
I let MSN messenger run on startup on purpose, i always log on everytime my notebook is on
Smoothtofu: I noticed one Assasins creed is installed. Can you run this on a 8400m gs? -
Anyways, I have way more installed than him... -
-
Lots different than mine. Your gonna laugh!

Yeah... See anything I can uninstall? -
Oh, and I already uninstalled the Amazon MP3 Downloader... Anything else?
-
I just loaded the REvoUninstaller, I'm tempted to reinstall all my uninstalled apps, and re-uninstall them...haha.
I'll probably just do another blasted clean install after school lets out. I'm thinking that the two programs I loaded at work beefed my boot-times...they both run from the network, so I think Windows may be searching for them, kind of like it does for a mapped network drive, when it is not connected...just a hunch. -
Realplayer, Apple Mobile Device Support (if you don't have an iPhone), and possibly Quicktime (by replacing it with QT Lite).
-
Okay ive tweaked Vista to improve startup, now achieving 5 seconds faster muahahaa
I just realised that if theres a cd in the drive, it takes about another 5 seconds longer. It tries to read it on POST and just before Vista loads, even when i disabled CD booting. -
yeah i cant seem to get less than 1 min with vista ultimate x64 and very few programs installed
ill post the pic when i can get to my laptop -
im at 40-45 seconds. im trying to get it down to 35 but i think ive done EVERYTHING i can possibly do. lol.
-
Leon, uninstall some of that Apple junk.
Also, what's with the duplicate Adobe Flash entry?
