For XP, there were various "tutorials" that led you through each system process and advised if you could safely shut it down to free up some resources.
Anything like this exist for Vista yet?
Thanks![]()

Where can these XP tutorials be found?

There are a couple books in stores that include a couple minor tweaking options. If you head down to your local bookstore.. I myself read a couple registry tweaks, interesting options, and little speed-up system tips that would probably help you out.
In terms of a detailed performance-enhancing based vista tweak guide on the internet? ... no not yet. -
Thanks
Kinda figured it was a little to early for Vista.
For the XP guides, I really can't remember. There was one site in particular that was quite popular...If I remember, I'll post it. -

There is another toy out there called Tweak VI. Some of you might remember this from the previous Windows (like XP's Powertoy Tweak UI). There is a freeware version of it that you can look it up on google. There is also a "pro" version where you have to pay, I'm not sure how much. But yea give this powertoy a try.

i would personally recommend against any tweaking to vista at the moment:
1. it is new, the whole registry has been changed, the whole engine works around it
2. vista, in its stock form at the moment, is doing better than a "tweaked" xp
3. ...
cheers ... -
I used Tweak VI for Vista and it is so much better than going thru a thousand user menus to get settings done.

I haven't tried this, so use at your own risk:

this is scary - most of the tweaks mentioned for vista are very much being based from previous XP tweak "recommendations"
vista is still evolving, who knows what the inside is still doing, especially with services and registry
i m one of those who just love to hack/tweak my system, but until i know a bit more about vista, i would hold off in this area
but hey, any infos are welcome for digest
cheers ... -
I've been tweaking a lot of the Vista services on my machine - right now it boots up on about 510 megs of ram, and after a few hours of use usually hovers around 550-650megs at all times.
A lot of the online guides right now will tell you that you can turn off the service called "Software Licensing" - because it's probably not usd a whole lot. Well, please don't turn it off... vista uses that service to get permission to render a majority of it's screens (like windows update, anytime upgrade, certain control panels, etc).
With the service off, you will click on a control panel or other such program, and nothing will happen... and you'll probably think vista is messed up.
So, don't disable that oneUnless you want to, that is..

can someone help me with using vista? like.. burning dvds cuz the program doesn't recognize that i have a 4 gig dvd, not a 1 gig dvd. does anyone have problems with vista's original programing? You'd think that once you make the program, you test out your stuff before selling it. anyone have solutions to my problz?

a nice Vista tweak guide can be found at Tweakguides.com

A nice Vista Tweaking Guide...in fact pretty much the Ultimate available tweaking guide (free or pay) is available right here at NBR. See the link below my sig.
Some of the tweaks, for instance the first, are tweaks not yet even found on many sites. -
Without the usual "vista su*ks", can any peoples nutshell why the almost everyone would rather have XP? I mean does anyone like vista at all???
If your processor is quick enough, (most are faster than we need, unless you game on it), and you have 2gig memory, is vista that bad?
thanks -
Frankly, for the average user Vista is a Godsend for the fact that a 'crash' can be walked out of whereas it cannot in XP. Vista requires more resources but, in the end has so many more toys, applications and upgrades we couldn't fit them all in one page.
The Vista/XP argument is put forward as was the XP/Milenium/Me etc because, those not wanting to pay to move up have an easy target on early releases. "I hate Vista because it is not compatible with everything known to man' Well maybe thats because it was released days ago.
For the most part, Vista is quicker and more compatible than XP will ever be. Vista has forced all hardware manufacturers to bring which used to be 'supercomputers' into todays realm of normal laptops. It has foced all software manufacturers to put up or shut up...and their have been casualties because of this.
As a result of this, believe me, Vista has done the whole computer industry a ton of good by FORCING ugrade.
Need any more be said??
I've said time and time again that I believe those relying on XP are those forced to through employment or those who are afraid to take the time to make it work for them. Through NBR, I may add a select few for ultra gaming requirements but nothing more.
Can you tell which side Im on? -
Fanboy?

hey thanks for the info. doesnt seem so bad...
