    I dont know why but for some odd reason whenever I perform a task which requires administrative privileges the prompt comes up asking for my password.

    This is fine since I am the administrator but previously a simple prompt would come up, with options for OK or CANCEL. Was this put in by some recent Windows Update or did I accidentally change a setting which enabled this password prompt rather than simple prompt?

    you can access the registry to change the local security settings. type run regedit and go to;

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

    you can modify User Account Control settings there. but BE CAREFUL.

    check this webpage as well;

    http://www.tweakvista.eu/show_tweak.php?tweak=164

    in the registry there is a key called consentpromptbehavioradmin
    this key controls what the UAC does when you are logged as an administrator
    it can be;

    0 disabled
    1 enabled; asks for password
    2 enabledl; ask to click to continue

    try it out. it works...
    the great thing about controlling the UAC through the registry this way is that you don't have to reboot to make a change!

    also- consentpromptbehavioruser is the same for a standard account.

    another nice thing to change is promptonsecuredesktop. if you turn this to 0, it will no longer darken the screen and seize everything up. this makes UAC a little less annoying.

    I am logged onto the initial account I created. I am the administrator. The only thing I am curious about is why all of a sudden it is asking for a password instead of the simple "ok" or "cancel" options which previously appeared. I did just download and install this program called "Vista Manager" or something, and thats when I noticed it first...but now I've uninstalled it.

    Still curious...

    My guess is you made a change with VistaManager. When you uninstalled the program the registry changes stayed. Security>System Security>UAC>Prompt behavior for Common Use > "Password Credentials".

    hmmm... i'm not sure this path exists on vista home versions. can't use secpol.msc (short for security policy). why microsoft decided to make the UAC different for different windows versions is beyond me. it really just results in home users having to access the registry to change their UAC settings. that being said, secpol.msc is just a graphical user interface to change registry settings.

    this is another great page explaining UAC options that can be modified through secpol.msc, or the registry. note that modification through the secpol.msc graphical user interface is not (currently) available in vista home versions. if you use vista home versions you have to modify UAC through the registry (or use a program like vista manager) if you want to do something other than turn it on or off!

    hopefully microsoft will change this soon. it's pretty ridiculous to make the UAC less accessible to home users. give home users a GUI, microsoft, come on...

    I think you are right. It must have been some default setting put in by Vista Manager. I am using Vista Home Premium by the way.

    I guess the way to change that setting would be to reinstall Vista Manager and change that setting.

    Even just now when I performed a task requiring administrative privileges, the password prompt came up....and I uninstalled Vista Manager last night.

    I guess I should have been a little more clear. Re-install the program and follow the above path. Undo any changes and uninstall.

    Thanks for bringing that up 000111!

    I just reinstalled the trial version of Vista Manager and edited the UAC prompt behavior. Thanks for the easy fix. Rep point added... :)
