Home Premium. You don't want/need Business unless you're joining Windows domains and doing other weird networking stuff.

Ultimate is just way too expensive unless you absolutely positively have to have all those cool little extras, or the upgrade is like $50.

    I'd also recommend VHP.

Also recommend Home Premium. Business edition is aimed towards actual businesses, not necessarily folks studying Business ;)

Just because there's the word business in "Vista Business Edition" doesn't mean it's designed for business or business students. It just means it has special network features that are only used in large corporate networks (such as domain joining). If you are just a student, the Home Premium Edition is fine. Also, VHP has the ability to author DVDs and make home videos (Movie maker), which the business edition doesn't

I've found out that if I needed a specific application to use with lesser version of Vista Ultimate, I have to download it, such as my Pocket PC connection. I would recommend Ultimate due to you don't have to hassle with missing applications.

There are really few differences, and IMO none are worth the extra price for Ultimate. Google it, as MS does have a very useful chart detailing it all.

Of course, if you already have your favorite apps for all you do, Business has a lot less cruft than Home Premium but still has aero, mobility center, automated backups, and such.

Ultimate is not worth the price. If you are a student, you do not need bitlocker, joining business domain etc. And Ultimate extras can be replaced by other third party software (and the lack of extras).
The price tag is also not justifiable

Media Center is in Home Premium, Business lacks it. All three have Aero. And Home Premium takes up slightly less resources then Business and Ultimate.

    Go Home Premium.

For clarification, Business have Windows Movie Maker installed.
It is Windows DVD Maker which absent from the default installation.

Eh...I really don't recommend Ultimate. Eats your memory even more and is very costly

If you turn on Bitlocker, in case something happens to your hard drive, wouldn't the encryption make it all the more difficult if not impossible to do a hard drive recovery?

I think if you are purchasing a brand new laptop, the upgrade to Ultimate is pretty affordable. In my case, I purchased a Thinkpad T60p, the upgrade to Ultimate was only $60. But if you are purchasing standalone Vista, I can understand the huge difference in price might not justify the benefits of Ultimate.

They haven't even shipped half the stuff they promised with Ultimate. I'd recommend against it unless you have a serious technical reason to waste your money.
