I'm going to be purchasing a Sager 860TU and have the option of either going with the standard Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit) or spending a little extra for Ultimate...
I checked out Microsofts site to see the differences ( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx) and the only real "additions" Ultimate interests me in is the "beest choice for laptops" and the "protection from hardware failure" as well as "better protecting data."
Are these features (or others not mentioned) worth the extra money for ultimate?

Generally... no.
Ultimate better for laptops?
Yes, because it has "better protecting data" - BitLocker, a feature no one uses because of the performance hit you take using it (it encrypts your entire hard drive).
Protection from hardware failure?
Uhm. I don't really consider a lame backup tool built into Windows "protection from hardware failure"
Especially considering SyncToy is free, better, and pretty sure it will work in Vista (though I admit that last detail is pretty important!).
Home Premium is fine for 99% of users, the primary reason people tend to Buy ultimate is "just to have it" -

dreamscene is nothing but a +CPU workload for me. They say it takes its toll on the GPU but its really the CPU who suffers the obvious workload

thanks for the responses, I will just go with HP.

Biz/Ult editions add a few potentially useful things such as Previous Versions (automatic in-place backups of data files), image-based disk backup tool, and Remote Desktop server. However, I could live without it.

If you have the option to buy Vista Business that would be better (costs less than Ultimate but has all the *important* features of Ultimate). Here is a detailed comparison from one of my previous posts:
Str - Windows Starter 2007
Home N - Windows Vista Home N (Europe only)
Home B - Windows Vista Home Basic
Home P - Windows Vista Home Premium
Bus N - Windows Vista Business N (Europe only)
Bus - Windows Vista Business
Sm Bus - Windows Vista Small Business
Ent -Windows Vista Enterprise
Ult - Windows Vista Ultimate
