At my college software store, they're selling these OS's and other major software like Adobe CS3 and Office 2007 for under $75. Is Vista Ultimate worth the $30 or should I just get a copy of XP (as I've read that with the new Santa Rosa processors it's much more efficient) ?

Btw, should I just hold onto XP until 2009 when support for it drops and just get w/e phases Vista out? Or just get Vista b/c if memory serves me well ppl didn't like XP in the beginning either...

that sounds accurate. slowly vista is becoming acceptable, sooner or later it will probably become preferred over xp. probably later, but not that much later.

i would go ahead and snag vista ultimate.

Not even for $30. If you don't need something, why buy it? It's not as if your school will suddenly stop selling Vista at a low price. Wait until at least SP1, and read the reviews before pre-emptively dropping the cash.

Get Ultimate, and store it until SP1 comes into town.

I agree for $30, get both. If you don't like Vista for some reason (don't let Vista haters keep you from at least trying it) then just go back to Xp.

You're lucky to be able to get it for $30, my school has it for $90 and thats only Premium.

full retail vista ultimate is like 400$ so thats a heck of a deal.

not sure what type they are selling (oem or something) but its cheap none the less. Id get vista, I have no problems with it except some older games. for day to day things like music, web surfing, ect its actually faster than xp was and I enjoy it more aswell.

humor me please - what is coming out in SP1 that's so amazing that people shouldn't upgrade to Vista now? is there actually something useful, or are people just giving a generic answer because that was the experience with past OSes.

as far as i've used it, Vista has proved to be just as stable, if not moreso, than XP SP2 under daily use. the UI improvements and enhancements to explorer are features that i cannot really work without now.
