    I was looking at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx

There are three softwares that Ultimate has and Home Premium doesn't.

    Backup & Recovery
    Fax & Scan
    Drive Encryption

Aren't there free software that does the same job? I mean is this all you get for an extra $100? Is there something I'm missing here?

How does drive encryption work anyway? If a file in a Vista Ultimate PC is copied to an external drive, does that mean that it won't be useable by other non-ultimate operating systems?

    Thanks

Yes. You are correct in assuming there are freeware programs that perform the same and/or better. You are also correct in assuming that if the drive is moved to another PC, it will not be mountable. Thats pretty much the reason for encryption.
