Okay, so all of a sudden you can get a free copy of Vista from Dell, HP, etc if you buy a notebook within the next sixth months.

And yet having just bought two systems from Dell and HP last week, I am completely out of the program.

This is incredibly frustrating, as Vista is an upgrade that I have been waiting several months for. I couldn't wait any longer for Microsoft to get its act together.... And now they're just giving it away free? Does anyone know if any of the major manufacturers are offering some kind of discount otherwise for recent purchasers?

I don't intend to pay for a full price upgrade if I have the opportunity to get it at a discount! Any information floating around out there?

It a common practice to release coupon upgrades in these types of situations since they know a lot of buyers remain on the fence waiting for the new release.

It makes all the "I'll just wait until Vista" buyers get off the fence. I think they did it with Windows XP and I think Apple did it with OS X.

You'd really have to call HP and Dell and plead your case, but, technically, they don't owe you the upgrade.

Dell have a so many day money back guarantee. You could ring up, say you want to return it and re-order it, so you can get the coupon. Then maybe suggest that it would save everybody a lot of time just to send you the coupon. It's worked with other freeboes for others before. :D

What version of Vista are they giving away anyways?
If it's basic, it's hardly worth getting...

For Dell I think they are giving out the Home Premium and Business. If that is their version of Home and Professional then I guess thats pretty much it.

Besides I think these are upgrades other than full install so either way its not something I am looking for.

I've always been able to do a full install, clean with HD format with my XP Pro CDs. Is that not the case with Vista?

HP offered me $150 credit to my account. I bought my laptop on the 15th.

well i think that xp is at its prime right now and i think its great, so i wont be getting vista for at least the first year or so because 1) it will be too expensive, and 2) i want to let microsoft get some of the bugs out of it first

I'm not sure about Home but for Media Center Edition they are doing Home Premium and for Professional they are doing Business for the Express Upgrade coupons. You will need to pay for the shipping and handling which is $10. Otherwise it is free.

Yea you have to pay for the shipping. Too bad it might not be the full installation disk. It is probably an upgrade.

Or a fresh install with Vista compatible bloat-spy-crap ware included on the disc.

I have two retail copies of WinXP Pro Upgrade and I've always been able to do full, clean installs with HD format.
