I have read a few threads where people have said the user rating is meaningless, but no one has said why.
What is wrong with it?

Most would say its useless because your overall rating is only as high as the lowest score which isn't altogether accurate.
Personally, just as with other more advanced programs, it should be adjusted so that the score is based on a calculated formula.
To give a perfect example of what I mean... If I throw my Seagate Momentus into the hard drive and run an experience score, it only results in a 5.2 for the drive. When I throw in my Mtron SSD, it now jumps to 5.9 and the performance increase on my system is evident in several ways.
My score still remains a low 4.1 though based solely on graphics. Does that seem right to you? -
Right, so basically the indivudual scores are a good guide as to how each bit of hardware performs, but the overall score is meaningless becuase it just goes off the lowest score.

Yup they are a fair indication in comparison to each other should you choose to change and compare. The next point to compare is, what purpose does any of those numbers serve.
I believe originally, the purpose was to get software manufacturers to support these scores and put that you need such and such a rating to run their programs...which failed. -
Yeah I was under the impression that the idea was a new game/any software would come out and one the back there would be rating guide to say what vista rating would be needed to run it.
Also i thought hardware manufacturers would start using them as an indication of how well their components or systems perform. -
Its a money scheme you know. if all the hardware/software manufacturers did that, more press and more sales for Vista.
