I keep having to rerun Windows Update for a bunch of high-priority hotfixes that simply refuse to install. The app reports that updates have been "Installed Sucessfully" and asks to "Restart", at which point I do.

After the computer reboots, Vista says "Please Wait: Configuring Updates". Twenty seconds later it says "Shutting Down", which reboots the computer and starts the process all over again.

Finally, I get past the Welcome menu and proceed to Windows Update (only to have it tell me that all of the updates failed).

    Bleh. lol

I've had this happen to XP way back when. What I eventually did was look for the specific update on Microsoft's website and download/install it that way. I'm sure this won't happen again for you. It's probably just a server to client error connection.

Dude, this is my problem too! I posted about how I wanted to reformat because of this!

The image you attached is exactly what my screen looks like too. I've even done a system restore to see if I could re-install after. But nothing is working.

I thought it was because I ran CCleaner without it fully installing. Did you do the same? Or maybe tomorrow Msft will have a fix... We should call em.

I just downloaded the very same updates in vista ultimate and everyone of them installed without any issues whatsoever (I just checked the update history :)) Something obviously went wrong while you were getting the updates. However unlike you, my notebook only restarted once. When windows came back up at the welcome screen it configured the updates and then I logged into windows as usual.

Actually I did it about ten more times this way, giving me the same endless series of rebooting and failed updates.

I then tried a different approach, installing all of the updates one at a time. All succeeded but one, pointing it out as the culprit:

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB935807)

The one above simply refuses to install through Windows Update, but it takes at least two reboots to find out it failed.

Anybody having any issues with this hotfix?

    EDIT: Missed the posts above.

Fatalah: Try installing one at a time like I did and see where you end up.

Evolution: Are you running Ultimate 64bit? The hotfixes may be different...........

Mike: I'll look up the hotfix on Microsoft and see if I can install it from there.

I am running vista ultimate 32bit(x86). And yes the (KB935807) security update was downloaded tonight when I updated vista and its status is installed. Further proof of this is I can see it in the uninstall updates section of "programs and features" in control panel.

Alrighty, I have an update (sort of).

Tried downloading/installing the hotfix directly from MS site http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...46-6afa-4a30-833d-e058e000c821&DisplayLang=en

Unfortunately, it had the same effect. Failed. :(

Following MS Support for error code 80070002:

I did all of this and "reinstalled" the hotfix, but the end results are really confusing now. Windows Update shows that the update installed successfully, but yet still prompts me to install it over and over again.

I don't have it, I have it, I don't have it.......................Sheesh    :err:

    Another update:

Kept trying to install the hotfix, which eventually caused Vista to BSOD on me. Sent a crash dump report to MS, as well as filing a support ticket that included data generated from some IE diagnostic app that Support had me install.

We will see what happens. For now, I have "hidden" the offending update. ;)

Have you disabled the Vista firewall since you are using Zonealarm?? The KB for the update indicates that it is supposed to fix holes in the Vista firewall. Turning off the firewall might be cause for the update to fail.

I thought ZoneAlarm automatically disabled Windows Firewall? It no longer shows up in Security Center............(sorry if I misunderstand, I'm just a little frazzled by this) ;)

Anyhow, all this started yesterday before I even installed ZoneAlarm. It just got a bit worse today. lol

I'm happy I'm not alone on this. I was all set to re-format today, but I'll just wait for Msft to figure this out since it's not an isolated issue.

Is this maybe an AVG issue? Because AVG isn't too slick with Vista, sometimes it errors out when Vista boots up.

Sometimes the updates dont install properly if the program that is being updated is disabled. But since you started installing it yesterday before disabling the firewall then its most likely an issue with the update itself. Not the first time MS has screwed up the updates  .

Personally, I doubt Microsoft will provide any useful insight into this (as it is likely just an isolated occurance involving too many random variables).

I also doubt AVG is the culprit, as it has been behaving itself with the last few updates. Miner made an interesting point about the hotfix addressing issues within Windows Firewall, but I'm not sure what to do about that. I can turn it on and I can turn it off, that is about the level of my expertise insofar as this situation is concerned. ;) :D

If it is simply a bum update, this does not explain how other users (like Evolution) were able to install the hotfix without problem.

Vista has been humming along quite tolerably of late, and I would hate to dump it prematurely. But if I were forced to do a clean install again, it might likely be an XP one this time........

    We'll see.

    OS: Windows Vista Business [32-bit]

All recent patches have successfully installed for me. (This proves everyone who cannot install it must have something in common, since it doesn't fail for everyone.)

I regularly get failed updates on Vista.

What I do is click on the failed update, go to details, go to the Microsoft page for the update, download it, manually install it, reboot, go back into Windows Update, the failed update still shows "available", so I install it (again) using Windows Update, and it installs.

Windows Update (and Microsoft Update for that matter) aren't the sharpest tools in the shed apparently.

Done that numerous times as well and it fails on both ends. Even wiping out the datastore files made no difference. My machine just does not like that particular update. lol

I do as well (even on my XP machines). It's convenient if you have any Office "plugins" installed, as they seem to get a fair amount of security updates......

Hmmm. Too bad. I thought it might be a difference. I've got all the latest updates installed successfully.

Really? I'm very impressed with how it's implemented in Vista. I've had nothing but success with updates... hmm... I'm sorry to hear you're having problems, though.

I'm OK with Vista overall, but did not have any updates fail on XP and have had numerous failures on Vista.

Thanks for the link. According to the posters, the current workarounds do little good. This saves me some time from playing around with it any further. :)

I have not heard back from MS yet. I assume they will just pull the hotfix and replace it with another at some point..........

    FIX!

You should first make the following directory om your system-drive:
    C:\windows\system32\logfiles\firewall
    (when C: is your windows-drive).
After that you should be able to install KB935807

    Problem explanation:
May be connected to running CCleaner before update is totally installed.

I disabled all startup services in msconfig and the update was able to install.
