I'm planning to purchase a Fujitus Lifebook with 1 GB of ram. Is it best to add 1GB additional ram for smooth operation? Thanks
-
Vista's better off with 2 GB of ram
-
Yes, I would definitely add that extra 1GB. You can get by with just 1GB total, but your computer will be very very slow booting up, and don't expect to have any more than 2 programs open at one time. (maybe more than 2, I don't know)
-
you can have more than two, just takes a LONG while to load.
-
vista works fine for me with just 1gb and i can have 2+ programs opened
-
1GB RAM is more than sufficient... I have it and experience fast boot times, but then again, that's not the only thing that counts.
And yes, exactly. 2GB will serve you better. -
If you only do thinks like MS word, emails and internet browsing, you will be good with 1GB. That's what my dad uses.
Just use sleep/hibernation anyway.
Vista with 1GB= XP with 512MB -
2 GB is the minimum in my opinion to run Vista smoothly! especialyl wit RAM being so cheap nowadays
-
I dunno about this.
I've used notebooks with Vista & 1GB RAM & it boots fine & theres no lag as far as I can tell. -
There are no more slowdows, it was true during Beta 2 because there was no RAM optimisation but now there are. A 1GB system uses about 550MB and a 2GB system will use 900MB
It's not as quick with only 1GB but it suffices 90% of windows users. -
It also depends on the processor. I was running on a single core sempron 1.8ghz.
-
My desktop also has a Sempron64 3100+, Beta 2 x64 ran okay (no games though) with 1GB
-
I bout an Dell Inspiron 1521 for my with with AMD Athlon X64 1.8GHz processor, and it came with 1GB of RAM. I thought it ran "okay" with the 1gig, but I still bumped it up to 2.
-
Thats what I thought,
Yee, could be.
I'm holding off on Vista because of my 25 second boot time in Windows XP.... -
Does it really matter how fast it boots?
-
If you reboot a lot, then yeah. But for me, no.
JMCS - I was using a lappy. -
ram is really cheap these days so i would pop in 2gbs, and never have doubts about vista's ram requirements again
-
Thanks to all for your reply's to my post.
For the record, the Fujitsu I'm considering has the Intel 2 Duo T5250 @ 1.5 GHz, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, and a 160GB 5400RPM hard drive. From the response posted here, sounds like I can get by with the 1GB of SDRAM that comes with this model. Most of my use will be internet. Costco, where Im purchasing the Fujitsu, has DDR2 SDRAM at $50 per 1GB. So Ill give it a try, and add it I need to.

In my opinion, 2GB is NESSESARY for Vista, Finally, some brands are realizing that... HP now doesnt even offer 1GB and includes 2GB from the start. 3GB and 4GB are good if your planning to really multitask and want the fastest possible loading and speed.
-
Nope, you're totally wrong. I have 2GB and i never use all of it, which disappoints me. I don't even use a full 1GB. So 1GB is fine unless you're doing some hardcore multitasking, with PS, 10 instances of Firefox, Open office, Microsoft Office, a game...
-
Once again, I agree with Calvin.
Vista uses about half your RAM, no matter how much you have. If you do some crazy multi-tasking and run RAM-heavy applications and your RAM is running short, Vista will release some of it for your programs. You can get by with 1 GB fine, although I do agree that, with current RAM prices, you should go with 2 GB. -
Oh, on any Vista PC ive used ive seen usually 46% to 56% just after booting. (With 2GB total) so then Vista's using pretty much 1GB. therefore, there "isnt any left" for smooth proformance. The systems were: HP dv6500t / Dell Inspiron 1520 (x2) / and a Gateway Desktop. All were with Home Premium.
-
On the contrary, my 1GB set-up uses about 50% of system ram at start-up as well on my system after closing some programs in task manager of course. Its smooth as well, however depending on how good your gpu is it's variable. If you have a shotty card then 2GB is the way to go...
-
you can run basic with 512 ram.
-
There you go
-
My experience(with multiple PCs) is 1GB on a Desktop runs just fine, but Notebooks seem to lag on 1GB so I would go with at least 2GB on a notebook.
Don't ask me why the differ between Desktops & Notebooks running Vista, it's just my experience. -
I have 4gb i know lol i just like seeing 4 on my PC
Vista and ram requirement: 1 GB enough?
