Alright, I'm confused.
I'm trying to connect from my Vista desktop to my XP laptop. Every time it fails with a message saying I cannot connect to the PC.
I can ping either way no problem.
However, from the XP laptop I can RDP into Vista!?!
What's up with this?

What version of Vista do you use?
-
Check the windows firewall on the XP machine.. make sure Remote Desktop is allowed in the exceptions (or try turning the firewall off altogether). also, make sure you set the XP machine to allow remote connections. Control Panel---System---Remote Tab.
-
Also, what version of XP do you use? Vista cannot RDP into Windows XP Home.
-
..and what version of Windows XP do you have....?
XP Home does not allow you to connect TO it, but allows you to connect FROM it
VISTA Professional and ULTIMATE allow you to connect TO it, and FROM it....Vista HOME does not allow you to connect TO it, but you can connect FROM it -
-
I had the same problem and started using logmein
It works perfectly -
Also make sure your XP firewall isn't blocking it.
-
For now, I'm going to just use LogMeIn...I've got to hit the sack...but I'll be back troubleshooting tomorrow.
Sheesh...I take a small nap and get 6-8 replies by the time I wake up! Thank you for the fast replies!

Is your network setup to "private"?
Also, check that both computer are in the same group, Vista default is Workgroup and XP default is MSHOME. -

I use a combination of Vista, XP, Windows 2000 server and Windows 2003 Server SBS. I am able to connect from any machine to any machine using remote desktop, so there is no inherent issue with this. Therefore this must be a scenario specific issue. Are you certain that the XP instance is set up to allow remote desktop? Sort of like the old first question from tech support... "Is it plugged in?" ...big ol' grin...

IIRC, Vista uses a newer version of RDP. There is a patch for XP that will let the 2 of them communicate correctly. I'll see if I can track it down, and post a link.

Greg hasn't replied with the version of XP he uses, so until he does, we are just guessing at the problem. -
Wouldn't it be great if people who asked for help would help people trying to help them by providing a little freaking information?
It's like calling an auto repair shop..."Hi, I have a car and it won't start....it's a blue one." -

XP pro. I realized that this is not supported on XP home. Not sure what Greg is running yet.

Anyway, I had issues getting XP to RDP to Vista (XP laptop at work, Vista desktop at home) and it turned out to be a FW issue. That was a new problem, and perhaps the lesson learned will help me get the reverse working.
EDIT: At least temporarily, I'm using LogMeIn to get work done. Hamachi (VPN program by same company) is/was how I was RDP'ing into my PC. -
Don't take it personally..I just love trotting out that Blue Car thing...a friend of mine called a mechanic with that line and I just cannot help myself.
OK...now that we have some basic info, let's go into some more detail.
At the present, what is the connection scenario? Are you at a home with both PCs are are you trying to connect from somewhere else to home? (determine if this is a network issue or an rdp issue)
When you attempt to connection, what--if any--errors do you get?
The first thing that occurs when you attempt to connect to an XP machine from Vista is a warning that you are connectiing to an older version of windows (orange pop up)--do you see that? (if not, we are not even establishing a connection to XPs TS service)
Can you ping the XP machine from the Vista machine? With HOST name? With Ip address? -
All be darned. Just because I took the FW down for 5 minutes and connected from XP to Vista (which is something I could already do mind you), the connection the other way started working.
I went from "This computer could not be contacted" error (or similar) to a working connection the first 5 minutes I got home.
I'm a freaking idiot.
@gerryf17:
Blue Car? What blue car? I love the line though.
Usually, I'm one PC at home/one at work. The only time I do Vista==>XP is at home, and usually XP==>Vista at work.
PING only works with the FW down, but that is because the default FW settings do a fairly good job of making my PCs difficult to find on a network. -
I was going to suggest downloading tcpview on the xp machine and see if port 3389 is in a listening state
-
Yeah, it is definitely working. Thank you for the help all!
Vista cannot RDP to XP, but XP can RDP to Vista???
