hey there guys, ive been having trouble with connecting and seeing XP computers with my new laptop.

The computers are on the same workgroup, firewalls are disabled on all machines and Link layer topology discovery is installed on the NIC.

i have tried googling for answers, in which i found an XP hotfix. All this did for me was make my Vista system recognise the computer on the network map. But the computer still does not show up under "computers and devices" and when i try accessing it by typing the computer name/ip, it says i dont have permission to access the computers.

all other networked computers can view and access my vista laptop with no problems.

can someone please help me fix this :(

I heard/read somewhere around here that Service Pack 1 for Vista will fix this issue. You can try it. But thats all i can think of to help you.

If Windows Update for Vista doesn't offer SP1, you can always download and install the full version depending on your system:

    64 bit

    I hope this helps!

check your network adopter properties for both your computers (xp and vista) and make sure that they are in sync (I mean uncheck your ipv6 and extra stuff on your vista comp which isn't there on xp).
sometimes the computer might not show up (in this method) but when you type the address of the shared folder it works like a charm
hope this helps. wish they fix this in xp sp3

You have to have LLTP(Link Layer Topology) update installed on the XP machine

To be honest vista - xp networking didnt work to well for me as well, I could see the xp machine in vista but accessing it took ages and more than often it failed.

A format wont do anything as its a matter of the networking settings

Are both machines using the same workgroup, also is the vista network set to public mode or private mode?

XP-vista networking are at a loss, trust me, I had Vista and a another laptop with XP, they did not see each other - direct calbe connection, through a router etc.
I gave up. So for file sharing I just used DC++ and it worked fast enough.
For gaming, I just gave a laptop an IP address, used that as a server, the second one would come in a adjacent IP address(so if #1 was .15, #2 would be 16), the second laptop would use the first one`s address as a gateway and voila, gaming network :)

For gaming, I didn't have any problems at my friend's house. I had to change the workgroup but it worked right away after that.

yep all machines at home are on the same workgroup and the network is set on private.

would setting a static ip address perhaps make a difference??

    i have officially given up.

    i have tried

    turning firewall off
    making sure LLTD is on
    network discovery is on
    network is private
    same workgroup
    SP1
    reinstall vista

all the reinstall did was let me view the computers for about 5 minutes, then they all dissapeared with no reason. vista can go ****en die, ive tried to work with it and it keeps ****ing me. back to xp.

There is one other way if you want to try, create an account on the xp machine with same username as the account on the vista machine.

Thats why I went to xp, the networking issues. Its no better being able to see the computers and not being able to access the files as the attempts time out.

I'm not dissing vista, I liked it but I do need networking so back to xp

I have no idea but it seemed to work for a lot of people who were having trouble, worth a shot.

    Also fell across this

To install the LLTD Responder to a computer running Windows XP

    1. Download the update for Windows XP from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70582

    2. Run the update on the computer running Windows XP that you want to appear on the Network Map.

    3. On the Software Update Installation Wizard, click Next.

    4. On the License Agreement page, read the license agreement, and if you agree to the terms, click I Agree, and then click Next.

    5. On the final page of the wizard, click Finish.

    6. If you are prompted to do so, restart your computer.

    7. After your computer running Windows XP restarts, generate a new Network Map with the computer running Windows XP included.

I never had an issue with XP and Vista on the same network.... Did you check for common mistakes like having a different user group? XP and Vista use different default user group names.

Thats the problem I had, but creating a user account with same name as vista machine on XP seemed to fix it.

Have you tried allowing the vista machine in the xp machines local policy??

hmm after playing around in services.msc and reading descriptions + enabling/disabling many things which sounded like it could help. i managed to view all the computers again. i just wish i noted what i changed, for future reference.

the share options were correct btw
