A while ago I stumbled upon this command line that I would run and it basically reset all of Vista services or something....I really am not sure what it did exactly, but to say that it reset everything to default? It's like, it went through the registry or the services and just... reset everything? I typed it in the "run" command and it did it's job...

The reason I want it is that many services of mine aren't running for some reason... when I try to force some services to run I get an error that a dependency group isn't running....

If anyone has any ideas it would be highly appreciated.. thanks!

don;t know what you are talking about but you can download a registry file from here:

    http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/registry.htm

Pick your correct version, download the file, un zip it, double click the file inside, say yes to merge.

    Reboot.

Tried that.... the actual command just hit me, sfc /scannow. Both didn't work.

For some reason DHCP and SENS services are hanging up on startup.... and I haven't the foggiest on how to fix this.....

    Thanks for the help.

From the command line, do a "net start dhcp" - it should give you an error message if it won't start. Once you do that, you can google for dhcp + error number. When I googled for "vista dhcp service not starting" I found a ton of posts where people had a similar problem. Adding the error to that search string might yield a hit or two that can help you.

As expected, a common "fix" was to reinstall...

It say's it's started already. I checked the service list, it says "starting."

DHCP and SENS are both "starting"... I've tried many different "fixes" but the two just don't want to work.

For some reason I can't reinstall.. my vista dvd only gives me the option to do a fresh install and I don't want to do that.... is there any other way to reinstall it?

What sort of _Vista DVD do you have? A retail version, or an OEM "recovery" version?

Also, do you remember all of the "tweaks" you did earlier and exactly which services you shut off?

    I've got the recovery one...

The only thing I had done was disable some services, but I enabled all of them now to default so that's not it. For some reason DHCP is and SENS is hanging on startup... they both just say "starting."

The recovery CD may permit you to do a repair installation, so you might want to check in the options it provides you when you start it up to see if you have the option of doing a repair installation.

Do they both yield errors stating that certain dependency groups weren't running? Also, what other errors are getting flagged in the events logs?

Na. Stupid HP won't let me. They will only let me do a fresh install.

    Let's see...

This what I am seeing in the "Problem Reports and Solutions"

Service DHCP Client hung on starting.
Service System Event Notification Service hung on starting.

    That's all I am seeing...

Your help is much much appreciated... thank you.

    Edit:

I think you wanted me to check the Event Log...... I can't. Service isn't enabled, went to enable it, it's telling me "error 1747, authentication service is unknown."

I am beginning to think my Vista install is completely FUBAR....

Unfortunately, I would tend to agree with you. At the very least, it sounds like something that's too complicated to diagnose properly online.

EDIT: However, I did a quick google on the error number & message you got for the event log service, and came across this thread on the MS TechNET forums that might have some possible solutions short of doing a clean reinstallation.

Take a read through that forum thread, and see if anything sounds like it might be fruitful to try - at this point, if you're going to do a clean reinstallation anyway, it can't hurt to try something that looks like it might fix the problem - at least if it's helped someone else.

    Ya () it. It's hopeless.

Thanks for all the help and support guys! I think I am going to go buy a new drive and do a fresh install. I need an extra drive anyway...

    Thanks once again!

Yep, you sure did. I completely missed your link.

To nu_D - read that entire thread, if you haven't already done so. You might get lucky with one or two of the fixes for your event log error (Winsock2 issues).

I tried everything in that thread. Thing I am realizing is that there's about 101 different issues that need resolving and somehow they are all intertwined and most of these fixes only target a specific issue. She's been through a lot... my GPU had died on me but I seemingly brought it to life by blocking the vents and letting it cook itself to... life. Think when I was trying to troubleshoot the GPU dying issue initially I royally screwed up Vista. I'll do a clean install and call it even....

Thanks for all the help and support guys, it truly is appreciated!
