I'm running vista home premium 32 bit. Whenever I leave the desktop alone for a while ( no switching windows, no minimizing or such ) this happens. you can see the minimize/max/close buttons are messed up too. I usually run firefox on the f11 mode ( there a name for this) so I don't notice these buttons messing up until i minimize it.

The only solution i know is to dispaly the desktop (win+d)

anyone know how to fix this. This is really bugging me ( it actually creeps me out....)

Could be video card problem, motherboard, or if you have screen savers on turn it off.

    Well,

I have integrated graphics on a t61 14wide. I'm using the computer when this happens though.

Even if it were gpu/mobo problems, how would I go ahead with fixing this?

Try rolling back or updating your video drivers.

And if updating or rolling back your video drivers don't work maybe you can go back to a restore point (If it hasn't been happening less than two weeks?)

Also, about fixing the graphics/motherboard (if that's the problem; hope it's not though) that's beyond my expertise.

OR! if nothing else works you can do a clean install of the OS. (Hassle I know)

I seriously think something is choking your GFX card and that is why everything is getting all frazzly. I would say instead of rolling back your updates you try and install the newest, and if that doesn't work try and recall if you did any kind of tweak or anything that relates to your GFX card, or if a family member has used your computer and accidentally changed something. I know for a fact nVida a cam out with new updates so check it out, and if that updating doesn't work report back here because i have a little suspicion but i'll keep it to myself unless the updates don't work.

Well i'm on integrated on a 1.8ghz santa rosa vista (bleh) I mean lots of people have this build. And, I haven't messed with anything. If it was the gfx, wouldn't other people have this problem too? hmmm

I think it could either be a defective GFX card, or a defective monitor. As i said, did you update your card, and monitor drivers?

I've updated gfx drivers and it hasn't helped. i'm dual monitoring, and it happens to both monitors. The thing is, if i hit win+d, it fixes it self. I've had this laptop for over two months now.

    any other ideas?

I own a T60 and after reading your concerns my first suggestion is to call Lenovo Tech Support tomorrow when they open for business. I don't think it's the OS but rather your GPU is overheating for some strange reason and that's why you are seeing hieroglyphics on the screen.

The key is you said it's when the machine has been on for some time. It's possible the graphics card is getting too hot because temps are climbing do to either a heatsink or fan problem. I'm calling it a hardware problem, That T61 is definitely under warranty. Call Lenovo tomorrow. ;)

I think Rodknee might be right here. I've seen similar effects when I had a graphics card which was prone to overheating.

It is odd though that hitting win+d clears it up.

What drivers are you using? I've read on LaptopVideo2Go that some of their drivers caused desktop distortion (they've fixed it now), which appears to be what you are experiencing.
