Vista search never finds any files, only folders.

For instance when I search from the start menu on "yellow submarine" it shows the folder containing that album but not the song by the same name.

If I navigate to the folder I can physically see the song is there. When I type "yellow submarine" in the search field it finds nothing.

If I tick "include hidden files and non-indexed files" it does find the files but I have to do this every time I search, so it is similar to XP-search, not instant.

I think it is not indexing the files at all. It is set up to index my 1716 personal folders. When I look at the indexing options (in control panel) it has finished indexing, with exactly 1717 items.
I assume it should show thousands of items indexed if it was including my files?

Can someone help with this please?

Thats kinda weird. When i am typing any particular part of the song (title, artist, song's file name or part of it) desktop search always show me the song.

Exactly! It is the same for all my files, mp3, jpg and so on. Basically the instant search is useless.
This is driving me crazy :-/

No, you missed my point. In my case, the desktop search works flawlessly. It can find any of the file (mp3, jpg, etc) by just typing one of its file name, artist, etc.

Right Click StartMenu -> Properties -> Customize (Start Menu)

then in the "Search files" part select "Search entire index" and that should make the most relevant stuff in your index show up in the Start Menu search.

Oh and make sure you have indexed the folder that your music is on or else it won't show up. But I'm sure you already did this.

if ooskong's suggestion did not work, try rebuilding your index too. :)

Sapibobo: what I meant is, yours is working, mine isn't :)

I tried all the start menu settings. Also tried rebuilding the index, moving it etc.

I have turned UAC off and my account is administrator. Could this affect it in any way?

    Hello,

It does not help you very much but I have EXACTLY the same problem. I tried everything but I can only indey folders, not files. No matter how big or small the index is, no matter wher it is or no matter how many times I have rebuild it

If you don't mind my asking; how may items do you have indexed, and what locations do you have indexed? Oh and I guess you could go into the "Advanced Options" and make sure your mp3 extension is checked for indexing. Other than that I'm not sure what else to tell ya.

    Hope that works for ya.

Found my problem: It is BitDefender Antivirus Plus which is screwing the Vista Search index !!! Took me 72 hours and several reinstalls to find out. I have the latest version of bitdefender and it says Vista compatible. But I am ver sure now that this program is redering the Vista search index unusable.
