With the release of Vista so close, are M$ releasing any vista upgrade coupons so that we don't have to splash out on the full price version? And if so, when?

It would encourage me to buy a laptop now. although I know it's probably going to be buggy, i would still rather have new than old.

The only think I have found is here
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3196
" Vista-capable PC systems using XP Media Center Edition are eligible for a free upgrade to Vista Premium; XP Home users will have to pay 50% of the Vista Premium price tag. Notebook sales have already started ramping up this quarter thanks to Intel's Core 2 Duo processors and the competition between AMD and Intel." Read more

I have it on good authority that if you buy a computer from a major retailer on or after Oct 26 you will be given a free upgrade coupon. If you buy a computer with XP home preinstalled you will receive Vista Home-Basic. If you buy one with Tablet or XP Pro you will receive Vista Small Business Edition, and with an MCE purchase you'll get Vista Premium.

    This is 100% accurate.

Next month computer retailers(HP, Dell, etc..) are supposed to install Vista but you can't buy it from a store until January.

I'm also in the same situation...want to get a notebook now, but I am waiting for the vendors to start giving out the Vista coupons before I buy. I don't want to have to shell out more money come end of January for Vista. Here's hoping that October 26 turns out to be the day. I know it's a bit early, but anyone have any idea if Sony (sonystyle.com) is going to be in on this promotion?

I don't know what Dell does, but I believe the general idea is that you only get the coupon if you BUY the computer on or after the 26th. Shipping would be irrelevant. However, I don't know how Dell does this. I'd imagine if they do run the deal, they would advertise it. My information is about a retail store.

You could just return it for a refund and order one again once the upgrade coupon is available for Vista. Once they are out you could also call Dell and see if you could talk a rep into letting you have the upgrade instead of sending back for a refund and ordering again. Just make sure you do it within your 21 day return period.

That's also called pirating software which is illegal and shouldn't be discussed openly on a board that has rules against such things.

her one thing to think about if u work for a company that has a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement in good standing Microsoft will be sending them Vista as well as Office 2k7. If u r cool with some one in IT dept ask them to burn u a copy it not illegal the software has been paid for.

I can say the same thing if i went to a buddies house and burned his copy of XP for my computer that i haven't paid to have XP on. He paid for it, but i don't have the right to install it on my machine!

I just ordered two laptops from Dell - a D820 from the outlet and an e1505 brand new - when I ordered the e1505 (ordered on 10/26) I was given the option for a free upgrade with $10 for shipping - so I guess that answers that?!

Does anyone know if machines purchased from the Dell Outlet will be eligible for the free upgrade to Vista? I had a chat session with a customer service rep, but they had no clue as it was the first day of the free upgrade program.

I guess I'll check with them again when my outlet laptop arrives next week.
