My one notebook is driving me crazy. Recently it has been freezing 90% of the time on boot-up for no apparent reason. I haven't installed, changed, or updated anything in weeks. By process of elimination, I found out that it seems to be "System Restore" causing the problem. When I disable it, my system boots fine. There's nothing unusual in the system logs on boot-up. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix System Restore? I have Vista/32

    ^ Smartass. :p

    I've got an idea...
Start> Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs > Add or Remove Windows Components

See if you can remove System Restore...

Removing it doesn't really solve the problem. ;)

If it *can* be removed as a Windows component, then it *should* be replaceable.

My hope (for you) is that it can be removed. Thats why its just an idea.

I just love it when Linux folks try to give advice on Windows. Please read your own signature line: "Attention: Linux is not Windows" and add "and vice versa". You can't remove System Restore using Add/Remove Windows components. Plus the OP asked for advice on how to FIX system restore, not how to get rid of it. <shakes head>

my solution is uninstall vista and go with XP till windows 7 comes out in 09, i think its coming in 09.

i had a similar problem before, when my comp started up too many programs started at once and it just crashed some times (this was an older computer).

if your system restore is causing problems then just keep is disabled as you said. Use norton ghost and create a ghost image, then screw system restore.

it isn't very necessary if you have ghost.

Read a little more carefully before making assumptions about me. Thats why I explicitly said:

Note the keyword, "can", used to say that System Restore may be removed. Also, you're making assumptions about what I know based on what OS I use? Thats a little ill-informed, don't you think, apart from the fact that I also use Windows? Oops...

EDIT: I also wanted to add that if you can remove System Restore, Windows would be logically designed such that you could install it again should the user wish it... thank God operating systems are not designed according to your assumption that once its removed, its gone forever.

After a few more hours of frustration, I think the problem is being caused by an update to the Avast! Anti-virus program. I just noticed it updated itself the same day the problems started happening. I removed Avast! and the problem seemed to go away.

Your "if it can" reply was not on the forum as I was replying, look at the time stamps of the messages. The message I was replying to only talked about uninstalling system restore, which I knew could not be done. So there was no assumption on my part about the ridiculous notion that if you could uninstall it you might not be able to reinstall it. I've been using Windows since the very first beta of Windows 1.0, so I am well aware of the implications of uninstalling a component.

Your initial reply, flagged with all the Linux braggadocio, seemed like one of the not so unusual responses to a Vista issue by some of the Linux community that implore the Windows user to get rid of Vista, or some equally less than helpful idea.

I apologize. Had the inital reply included the suggestion to uninstall and reinstall system restore, I would not have made that erroneous assumption. I see that you did, as I was typing my reply, clarify your suggestion. And in context of that second reply, yours does appear to be a logical and helpful suggetion. Too bad that System Restore is not a removeable and hence reinstallable component, or that idea might very well have helped the OP.

My posts were fairly clear in their meaning; my original post said "if".

You are making blatant and uninformed assumptions about me. For one, I'm not a fanboy. Although I use Linux and am a fan of the OS, I still use Vista quite happily. Use whatever works is my "preference."

Hmmm, very interesting how you left out the part where I apologized and said that in context of the two messages (one of which was not there when I initially made my first comment) that yours was a good suggestion. Whatever.
