Hey, about 2 weeks ago, soon after i installed avira and bought a microsoft sidewinder x8, vista started having big problems. Sometimes it will open the start menu and type in qinsoq, then backspace it and type windows update and start it. sometime it will type malware removal into the box, also. every once in a while, when im browsing the web, it googles a bunch of numbers, then avira. like this 1927483 avira. i dont even have avira installed anymore. i switched to avast. the last, but most annoying thing it does, is hold down the "click" button for a while. i'll be browsing and all of a sudden, everything gets highlighted when i move my mouse over it. i noticed that turning the power on my mouse off seems to help. does anybody know whats going on? i scanned my computer with malwarebytes, avira, avast and spyhunter with no results.

You've most likely got a virus or other malware that the scans failed to detect. Most likely, a rootkit of some sort. This Wilders Security forum thread contains some links to free rootkit revealers that run on Vista.

If UAC is enabled (it is on default settings), IE7 and IE8 are more secure than other browsers, because they take advantage of "Protected Mode", which is essentially sandboxing. I think Chrome also uses sandboxing, but the current situation is that any up to date browser is just as secure as the user driving it.

Yup, that's usually the best way to sum it up - just like with cars and guns, browsers (and OSes) are only as secure/safe as the mind behind the finger pushing the "click" button.

Perhaps Avast is just being unfriendly to IE, and maybe a little too cozy with FF?

Agreed. I've got Avast set up on two of the systems we have (another runs Avira, and on the newest system I'm just being lazy and milking the Norton trial installation until the trial period runs out). I like seeing that thing go of course, a truly inventive malware writer would just duplicate the behaviour to lull us into a false sense of security :D).

Oh. That happened to me. I still own my sidewinder, but when the problem you had happened to me, it'd just randomly press keys. Anyway, what I did was go into the mouse config (microsoft mouse application) and check if any of your mouse buttons have been switched to Macro. If they have, just chnge it or reset the mouse buttons.
