Well, as the name implies, Vista Basic is the Starter Edition of Vista, Vista Home Premium includes Aero Glass, Windows Media Center, and some more features, but the difference is not too much.
Vista Business and Vista Ultimate contain more features related to networking, domains, and Ultimate contains the DreamScene feature that you can use to set a Video Wallpaper.
Performance-Wise, there is not too much of a difference, actually, Vista Basic will run faster without Aero Glass, DreamScene and Windows Media Center, but you will miss out those features. -
I have Vista Home Premium..and it does what I need it to do.
If you don't want to spend any *extra* money..just go with Basic..you will be fine!

i would just get home premium, basic is really stripped down -
I would just wait and buy Windows 7 which is released in 4 months (Oct. 22, 2009)
But then again it's not my money. -
I second that! get Vista Basic now, then buy Windows Vista when it comes out, no use paying extra now for something that will be old in a few months. -
manufacturers OEM disk can be a solution!!! no serial needed!!

Anyway, theoptimist, I would get at least Home Premium instead of Home Basic. As others have said, it's very stripped down and doesn't even include the Windows Aero visual effects. -
Get a Home Premium is better.
Performance for Home Premium and Home Basic is just a little bit different(very very less) but I still like Home Premium.
HomPre have extra features but HomBas doesn't.
HomPre can support much more softwares but HomBas does not.
HomPre have aero glass, HomBas does not. -
So if you'd like Win7 - dig around about the upgrade option and when its offered.
I.e. swapping OEM discs will only work for laptops from the same manufacturer and possilby the same model - anyway, OEM instals are bnd to your hardware anyway - so even if your old laptop dies you can't migrate an OEM license.
Edit:
You'll need Vista Business or "higher" if you need to connect to a domain name. -
Thx guys. another question, though. I'm thinking about getting the Dell Latitude E6400, but there are a lot of complaints about how vista is really slow on it. Oh, and another question, I guess. How easy would it be to upgrade a vista premium to Windows 7? Thx.

If your trying to save money..just stick with Basic.
Put your money towards something else. Then Upgrade to Win 7 when it's fully availi'!!
(That is what I would do)

By the way - Windows Aero runs of the GPU, the Vista Basic sheme off the CPU - so Vista Basic stresses the CPU more... -
just curious, then how would i upgrade? i just a general idea so that i would know how easy or hard it is.

Either you do a clean insta - NBRwill help, or I heard that Win7 will be able to upgrade from Vista, but that may leave a mess - depending on what you do and other fators, quality of drivers etc.
But even clean installing Windows is very straightforward nowadays.
Nothig that can go wrong really - except setting the wrong size for your C drive (choosing a value that will be too small later, you can't make it too small for the OS)
And after your installation, everything driver related - NBR is here to help, expecially the Dell subforum if you buy a Dell.
