    Hello everyone.

I have just recently installed vista basic on my laptop, contrary to many people, I think it runs fine and fast enough for me. But there is one problem: temperature.

With XP, under idle I would get 43oC (fan off), maximum load is ~66oC. While with Vista, under idle my laptop temperature is about 49~50oC (fan on), under maximum load it easily goes over 70oC. And I used RMClock to downclock it to the lowest speed when idle, and of course, as I use vista basic, aero is off, I don't need eye candy anyway.

My laptop spec is: T7100 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM, 8600M GT.

I see that Vista has many improvement over XP (like the audio stack) and I have no problem using it (UAC is fine), but I don't want my laptop to burn, especialy with recent Nvidia GPU defect. :(

What I've found with Vista is that on a fresh install it will work to optimize itself based on your usage of it. It tries to figure out which applications you use frequently so it will pre-load those files and allow you to get working/playing faster. After a couple weeks it will calm down.

Again, this is my observation and your experiences will be different.

Anybody old enough to remember OS/2?

I had a friend way back then that used it, or maybe had access to it at work. She said they use thermocouples to check CPU temperatures (this was back in the days when most cpu's didn't require heatsinks), and they found that one spot on the cpu case was hotter when running OS/2 than when running DOS or Windows.

As Vista uses more resources overal than XP this is normal and only to be expected, especially if your laptop wasn't designed for use with Vista.

I honestly believe this statement to be wrong - we only ever had laptops/notebooks in our house (my SZ is the 5th, of whioch 4 still work) and none ever used a notebook cooler.
In fact, all "normal" notebook users don't need one as they do nothing to stress their laptops to temperatures where it becomes a requirement/advantageous.

Did you install all the right power management / ACPI software from the manufacturer?

For my notebook, which is dual-boot Vista/XP, Vista actually runs 1-2 degrees cooler most of the time.
