A friend of mine works in IT at his company. He has an original Vista Business DVD. Can I purchase the key alone online? Or buy a copy of Vista and ask to get the key in advance? Is it even downloadable upon purchase? I would rather get Vista Ultimate.

MS currently has a program in which you can purchase the OS online and download the bits. While I haven't actually done this, I'm relatively certain that they would email you the key and/or have the key show up on your web browser.

The Vista Business DVD is the SAME as the Ultimate DVD as far as I know. A Business key just activates the Business features. Likewise with Ultimate. So with an Ultimate key and a "Business" (really just all of Vista) DVD you should be able to install Ultimate.
