Has anyone tried THIS or know of any other "Vista like" UAC program for XP?
-
-
Why would you want one
?
-
What's THIS?
-
I actually like UAC and would like to use it on a Older Notebook that can only run XP. Seems like they figured out a way to take just about everything from Vista and put it on XP, except the UAC.
-
yea..it's called like Take My Rights Away or something..wait..i'll find it and edit it in here..
Edit: it's called DropMyRights google it
Edit2:Ok nvm..LOL -
Sorry, forgot to link. Fixed now.
-
This seems interesting, I'll try it out.

No way... I don't care for uac... although, it is a good idea. But uac does a lot more than what this program seems to be offering.
All you have to do is download virtual pc, and install an old copy of windows in it... open new files, downloads you don't know, sites you don't trust, etc, in virtual pc.... off you go. If the vpc has issues, "reset" that bugger. Nothing on your main system.
I challenge the way uac works anyway. If you are stupid and download a file, what keeps you from clicking "ok" when uac comes on? lol... Most (not all) virus/spyware/malware require a user action. In other words, the user has to do something not so bright. "Oh, wow a video that says 'This is Funey (sic)'. Think I'll open it... I bet it is funny."
And I find myself automatically clicking ok... becomes a pain... I love windows, but the way an Apple Mac does it is the way to go.... -
jtmat, I share the same view about UAC as you do.
How does Apple's work ? -
UAC should help with "drive-by downloads" and data files that contain exploits (such as buffer overflows). If it's the kind of malware where you get tricked into knowingly running an executable ("hey check this out it's awesome!!!")... then UAC won't help unless it makes you think twice about running it.
-
Not so in-your-face as uac... uac is too much... people click "ok" without thinking about after a while.
-
Or quickly turn it off since it annoys you to the point at which you want to send a fist through the screen.
-
As I found out the hard way, if you don't turn off uac when you FIRST install vista, and turn it off later, you will not be able to get to all of your install programs.... but the program info is there when you turn on uac. I had this happen with xara... I did not test anything else before I turned uac on again. Very strange....
-
UAC prevents more than just downloading a malious file.
-
Yea, it raises blood pressure.
-
Yes, it also prevents installing things, changing settings, editing or even viewing the registry, the device manager, and any other "control" part of the computer without clicking "YES, I am sure I want to do what I told you to do a second ago".
-
Can we stick to the original OP question here? I already have enough experience with UAC to know that I like it. Please leave the bashing in another thread.
-
I use Kerio Personal firewall (think it's Sunbelt now!) which you can configure to be very UAC like (I think) if you really wanted to... of course you can also permanently allow certain things to run, so I do that for most things.
Mine is just setup to now notify me if anything I run has been replaced with another version. -
The paid version of ZoneAlarm actually does the same thing as UAC and it actually does it better then UAC from what I remember. Theres a trial for the Pro version I believe.
-
I haven't messed with ZoneAlarm since ME. I'll take a look at it again. I'll also look at Kerio Personal firewall. Thanks for the suggestions.
I was hoping to find a something I didn't have to Config to death, So if suDown doesn't work, I guess I got to go the Firewall way. -
I don't like UAC at all, that's why i disabled it a long time ago.
I mean, if it learned my habits like not asking me if i really want to run firefox every 5 seconds then i'd be fine with it.
But it just needs more time to mature before i even think about re-enabling it.
So i think this program will come in handy in maybe.....6 years when Microsoft decides to update it. Or someone makes a better clone.
Also i agree with the person who said Zonealarm does a better job at UAC than UAC because i used to have it for me XP system and it learned my habits after a while. That's all i ask for. -
There's a whole bunch of Host Intrusion Protection System (HIPS) applications, which are pretty much like UAC on sterioids.
