    OS: Vista Business SP1 32
    Software: Outlook 2007

I was checking mails, synchronizing my communicator and setting out new appointments in my Outlook. For some reason, i see a pop up message in my task bar saying that UAC has closed outlook. The truth is, nothing happened, Outlook was not closed. Then for some reason, Vista gives me a message that outlook has stopped responding, when the truth of the matter was, it was running!!!! I could see progress between it an my communicator!!!!!, and shades the whole program out and pop up the lovely window. Wait for program to respond, end, restart.

Long story short, Outlook broke and it broke badly because of this   . My *.pst was corrupted and scanpst did not fix it. I created a new one, managed to patch it but...

    1. New e-mails arriving have no sound.
    2. New e-mails arriving have no small envelope in the task bar.
    3. New e-mails arriving do not make the Desktop Alert pop up.

I can confirm that sounds in Vista work for New E-mails. Moreover, I created a rule to play a sound a show the Desktop Alert window but no joy   !!!

Any solutions besides FORMAT the thing and put it back? I cannot afford to format now, my U6 is vital atm.

I think Outlook's settings got corrupted somehow...
Possible workaround(not exactly for your case but..):

    Source: http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/vistaupgrade.htm

If you decide to try this do NOT forget to backup everything you modify/delete.

    This is too bad :(

Wait have you tried the registry trick too(the second part of the quoted text)? Or only the file renaming?

The joy of VISTA. I spent 4 hours making my U6 the way it was and....voila. Add to that 2 repairs and 4 uninstalls and reinstalls and you know how I feel.

Ok I don't get it. This is REALLY odd!

You reinstalled or you did repairs only? If you reinstalled do you performed clean install or normal reinstallation without format?

Do you know why you got the problem in the first place?

Couldn't it be because of some faulty hardware? Like a broken memory module or so? It seems strange that vista only crashes like that and that you can't restore it if it's nothing else wrong.

are you running the program on the same drive or logged in as the same user when you installed it?

if you installed it logged in as Admin, and then you logged in a guest, into vista, that could cause the issue.

Or, when you installed Office, you messed with the setting. By default, I think office is installed as "Run from all my computer".

But, I get a different message when I try to run Office on vista, while it's installed in the XP drive.

    -------------

also if you're using outlook connector, the user name should be left alone. if ur vista login is admin, than the username for outlook connector, when prompted should be the same.

Thanks for everyone who replied. Regarding my U6, I have no hardware problems. RAM okay, HDD, okay, I did extensive tests so that is not the issue.

After I reinstalled VIsta I put in the Office 2007 cd and ran setup. Office installed fine, I rebooted and apparently it was not installed for my username. This is weird, because I did install it with my username. I know my way with computers so I know what I am doing. The problem is with VISTA. I took ownership of the file, I ran every office program with administrative rights and it is still not installed for any of the usernames. Weird, because I did install it!!!
My next steps were to repair it, and reinstall it. I did, and as mentioned in my post, Vista keeps giving me the same bull over and over. Now, I disabled UAC and Word ran. The rest did not. So i put UAC back, rebooted and nothing ran anymore.

Bottom line is, Vista locked my Office 12 dat file. Did I ask it to do that? No, it did it on its own because....it is Vista.

P.S: regarding the connector, now I did not install it yet.

I spoke to MS support and they told me that some versions of Office 2007 Ultimate tend to be in conflict with a certain update embedded in Sp1. He did not specify and said they are working on it. So I had to use the normal Vista DVD and not the slipped one I created in order to install Vista without SP1. I installed OFFICE, took ownership of the whole thing, updated to SP1 and now it works.

maybe your slipped version was corrupt. doubt it was a vista issue.

dont understand why so many people see to have UAC problems, took me 30 seconds to disable when I got my system and has never bothered me since.

It is the MSDN one....I have a subscription, so it was not that issue. I've been slipping Windows long before n-lite came out. I use to do them...manually.

Regarding the UAC, you must be one of the luckiest ones. You doubt it was a Vista issue, microsoft support said it was a Vista issue. Don't feel offended if I believe them and not you.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

So rather it was Vista SP1 that was the issue not Vista ;)

Did they say what update it was specifically? Just curious

In the future you might want to consider using a simpler (and therefore more stable) email program like Windows Live Mail. It does the exact same thing as Outlook, but it isn't as complicated.

Thank you for the recommendation but I will stick to outlook ;). You can't teach an old dog new tricks ;).

I found that Outlook 2007 under Vista installs and enables quite a few add-ons, all of which I have disabled and uninstalled.

Outlook 2007 is a real pain in the butt of a prgoram. Since installing it I've had so much trouble and takes fooooooorever to load. Someone did warn me a while back when I was asking about it, I should of taken their advice. Planning on going back to 2003 this week.

It doesn't matter whether it's 2007 or 2003, both are more painful than WinMail/Outlook Express. If the .pst file reaches ~500MB (IIRC) then you should compact it and create a new .pst file. Othewise be prepared to lose your e-mails.

The integration with calendar is nice though.

okay access the AppData via User folder and backup the .Pst and various other outlook data files.

now delete the main file in the appdata folder.

then download Recuva and try recovering them back...hopefully it should recover the lost data.

    and Disable UAC.

Why do people still use UAC never ceases to amaze me.

if it gives u sense of security then its like ignorance is bliss.
