Vista only let me shrink the C drive by 6.7GB  This is the second time I try to shrink the C drive. The first time worked out great. I was able to create a 40GB partition for XP. Later I decided to delete XP and the Vista recovery partition. Then I expanded the C drive with the unused space.

Now I can only shrink it by 6.7GB. Any idea what is going on?

how much space are you using on c:?
I am a bit confused about what you mean. you want to change the c: partition from 40 to 20 or so GB but you can only change it to 34GB minimum?

Sometimes your HDD gets fragmented, so there will be some fragments in the end of the drives.Unlike the files that can be fragmented, the Partitions can only be sequential,so in order to prevent data loss, the windows prevents you from shrinking it any further from the place of the last fragment.
Defragging the HDD will surely help. :)

The size of the C drive is 120GB with 97GB free space. I defragged it before attempting to resize. Anyway, out of frustration, I decided to do a fresh install of Vista, but ran into more problem.
