So whenever I double click a directory name in an already open window, instead of showing that directory in the same window, Vista decided that she wants to open it in a new window. I checked in File and Folder Options, and it says open in the same window...
    Why Vista, why?

I've just installed the latest patch Tuesday updates including the mighty Internet Explorer, beat that!

    and now this happens.

    Humm..

    any help?

This happened to me once but how it got fixed...I can't remember/I've no idea. Have you tried the most obvious - a restart?

Its IE8's fault - a google of the problem ("IE8 breaks explorer") shows it to be common - just uninstall it and use firefox, problem solved.

Funny how M$ofts own browser breaks their OS though eh!

Don't know what IE8 is supposed to be "breaking" but I've got _Vista 64-bit and IE8 installed and haven't once had the problem described. It therefore cannot be the case that "M$ofts own browser breaks their OS" but more likely it's the case that some commonly used so-called "tweak" that's broken the OS and is causing the problem when it interacts with IE8 (so-called because most "tweaks" are nothing more than "twinks").

    what about checking this value?

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shell
What is the default value? if it's "explore", delete explore.
