So I am currently using Vista Home premium x64, and its fine
Tweaked to how I like it, no issues

However, I like to have the latest stuff :D :D, and have a chance to get Seven for free soon (job and student discounts), and can get the ISO from the links in the thread here.

What I want to know is what are the main advantages of Seven over Vista as of now

Not features, but advantages for a person who is fairly tech-savvy
The reason I made a thread is because I haven't found many comparisons of Vista SP2, to Windows Seven as of now

    Many thanks :D :D

Totally get 7. I got vista late enough into development and with a fast enough rig that i didn't have problems, but 7 is just much nicer to use. It feels quicker, things don't go wrong as much and it's got all sort of little things and one big (the new taskbar) that are fantastic!

Basically, I just find it nicer to use. Easier to get things where I want and snappier.

I run Windows 7 as a virtual machine and it's impressively fast and nimble. There is no question between which is better between Vista and 7. Seven all the way.

You can always download the Win7 iso and test it out for 30 days. Try it out, if you do get Win 7 for free or cheap, you can always go back to Vista if you dont like it.

well, functionally you probably wont notice much difference, your programs will all run the same

however, the taskbar is.. more organized, but at the same time, it is less efficient, for example, unless you changed the settings, your taskbar buttons are grouped together according to program, so you have to hover over the program, then click on the window of that program that you want to open

the taskbar also looks nicer now, nice looking animations

you also get the newer version of windows media player, which is nice

and directx 11, which i believe is only available on 7

other than these differences.. it's pretty much the same as windows 95 in how we use it

i look forward to the day when someone goes about a radically different approach to the OS UI

    Thanks for all the replies

I think I might just go for Seven
I have used it and I like alot of the small touches, eg being able to order around the taskbar buttons :D

I would also want to know how Seven's compatibility with older programs and games is. Vista was a pain in this regard and many old programs used to crash alot

if it works on vista, it should work on 7

it'd be rare for anything to not work on 7

The best way to know is by installing Win7 and installing these programs to see if they work and apply compatibility settings if needed. If that does not work, try XP Mode in Professional or higher editions. Like Brawn said, if your program currently works in WinVISTA, it will work in Win7, and Win7 continues to recieve compatibility updates.

Derp, that's so original and new!
You can change that, you know.

Anyway, definitely go for 7. It builds on Vista's strengths and addresses its weaknesses. You'll enjoy it.

    Thanks guys

I was thinking along those lines also

I will grab some drivers, and give 7 home premium a go, probably end up sticking with it :p

Also, will Vista x64 drivers work with Win7, because the acer site has very few Win 7 drivers for my laptops

Thanks for your input guys :D :D

win 7 will be happy with the Acer Vista drivers drivers, but I normally pull fresh win 7 drivers from the actual component manufacturers.

Yeah, guess I'll check the models from device manager and go to each site, since acer doesn't really update their site much

on your 5930 all you may need is the card reader. its been awhile since I upgraded one.

pull the lan/wlan drivers and fresh video drivers just incase, the new windows update should take care of everything else if its not already inplace

I almost never go to the program menu anymore. Honestly all my programs are on the task bar. The ones that aren't (zip, power iso etc.) are accessible through a right click.
Libraries is also a nice way to organize things. Over all win7 is just a really nice polished OS.

Also the pro & ultimate versions have XP emulation for older programs..

I say you should do it, you've got nothing to lose.
