I would get Vista. I've had little to no problems with it on my D630 and the few that I do have (some occasional issues resuming from sleep) I expect to go away after SP1 is released in mid April. :)

Vista. By the time you graduate, the work scene will have caught up with Vista, and you will be all set.

In any case, either is a great OS.

Were the machine my own and a choice were offered, I'd go with XP. I bought a desktop with Vista and gave it a shot, but just didn't like it and so erased the drive and installed Ubuntu. Note, please, that I didn't say anything was wrong with Vista - I simply didn't care for the OS.

As stated above, Vista may improve and "the work scene" may well catch up making it a better choice for you. In any case, good luck.

XP...there are some university applications and programs that you may need, that are not compatible with Vista. You need to worry about your needs now, not your needs 4 years down the road when Vista plays nice with everything.

Vista will be around for a while, XP may not be here much longer. Personally, get XP.

For that matter, if you're "geeky" enough, learn on VM's and install any flavor of whatever OS you want.

    Fun stuff.

    Paolo

With SP1 around the corner, I'd say get Vista.

But as Greg said, make sure you consider your needs now, and what your college of choice requires.

Well, you can get XP now. Use Linux if you want to as well (useful at times I must admit), and somewhere down the road upgrade to Vista if you want to. Or dual boot, or whatever.

But start with XP first, play it safe.

Most colleges offer academic discounts on OS's and software, so an upgrade to Vista in the future may cost as little as $30 for Vista Ultimate (like mine :D).

    Dang...we get x86 only for $30

Oh, and I'd say at least 3GB for multiple OSes. Get 4GB if your main OS is 64bit.

Agreed. I haven't made the leap to x64 just yet. I'm waiting for better support all around...driver and application wise.

SP1=Service Pack 1-It's supposed to improve many aspects of Vista, including reliability and application/device support,

Though Vista has come a long way since release, SP1 will expand on those, fixing several known issues regarding Vista.
