I am helping a friend who wants to optimize battery life on his Dell XPS M1330. I know that turning Aero off can significantly improve battery life.
Just curious on how some of you are tweaking your power management settings to compromise performance/battery life
Thanks

He should put it in "Power saver" power plan when his on battery life too - it downclocks the CPU, decreases the brightness of the screen and whatnot. If he leaves it in "High performance" the battery won't last more than 1/2 hours.

In addition to the power schemes that come with Vista (and cannot be deleted), I created two others. I call them Normal and Full Off. I usually run with my customized Normal plan, but use the Full Off now and again to keep the battery in shape.

According to someone at MS, you can get most of that benefit by leaving Aero on and just turning off the transparency... which apparently the power saver profile does, according to this blog post: http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2007/05/14/aero-and-battery-life.aspx
EDIT: Yes, I see that "power saver" does turn off transparency when on battery.
