I want my laptop to sleep after 15 minutes only if the lid is closed. I never want it to sleep when the lid is open. Apparently this request is far too complicated for Vista, as I don't see any options under the power settings that will let me do exactly this.

Why don't you simply set it to sleep when lid is closed?

fd9, it's not that it's complicated, it doesn't make any sense. Just set it to go to sleep when the lid is closed. I hibernate mine when the lid is closed, and sleep it after one hour with the lid open. The power button shuts down the machine. FWIW.

You can set it to Never sleep with the battery or AC easily enough (right-click battery->More Power Options->Change Plan Settings), and leave the default Sleep on closed lid. But I don't think you can set it to sleep after 15 minutes of closed-lid and never sleep with the lid open. You can, under Advanced Power settings for a plan, tell it to not sleep with the lid closed.

When we close the lid it's because we don't use it...it's logical that the laptop goes to sleep at this moment... (resuming from sleep is not long anyway)

Furthermore, if the reason why you want that is because you want to carry your laptop from one place to the other and then continue working on it, the answer is the same because it's also recommended to avoid moving it while the hard drive is active
