I've noticed that my laptop becomes very unresponsive after coming out of sleep mode in Vista 64-bit. My applications slowly stop working one by one, usually starting with Firefox for some reason. I have to restart the system before everything starts working again. I just did a clean Vista install too and I still have this problem. It's very annoying because I need sleep mode for school as I put my notebook to sleep in between classes.

I understand this was an issue before the Vista SP1 upgrade which included a hotfix to fix the situation but apparently I still have this problem. Anyone know what the deal is or how to fix it? Thanks!

Run "Event Viewer", look at the system logs, and see if you see anything related to devices not resuming from sleep properly.

    Also:
    - Make sure all your drivers are up-to-date
    - In device manager, disable any unused devices (modem, firewire, smartcard, etc... it only takes 10 secs to re-enable if you should ever need it)

The Event Viewer didn't show anything really out of the ordinary. I had a couple of server warnings that related to someone else having the same computer name as me but besides that, nothing too crazy.

My drivers are up to date and so far I only have bluetooth disabled on my system so I'm gonna disable some more things like the modem.

I also found this article from Microsoft's support site but it states that the hotfix provided there has already been included in the SP1 update. Should I run it again anyway?

No. As long as you have SP1 installed and all the normal updates that come through Windows Update... don't go installing hotfixes for pre-SP1 Vista.

I wonder if that might be causing you problems. Once you're asleep, the other computer takes your network name (and maybe other network info) and network apps don't work anymore.

Try disconnecting from the network, and then sleep and resume, and see if you still encounter the problems.

I tried to replicate the situation just now without messing with the network but it worked just fine. I'm not on campus right now so I can't test the network theory just yet but I don't believe this is the problem. I've experienced this issue a few times at home as well, just not right now for some reason. Things always work when you're trying to find the cause of the issue lol

Ok a little update. It happened again this morning and I checked the System Logs and there is actually no error messages at the time that it happened. I noticed that this problem only happens after my computer has been in sleep for a while (usually about 45 minutes-1 hour).

    Anyone know what's going on?
