Im having trouble with the, in my opinion, over active protection software that comes turned on by default in Vista. Ive turned off the windows firewall and windows defender and tried to atleast reduce the protection because often times its blocking things that I intend to be doing, or making me work around it. Specific problem is extracting an exe file from winrar. It extracts all the files except the exe because its detecting it as something malicious (its a binder). The exe's just aernt appearing.

i personally do not believe that vista would stop or block file extractions - at least i have not seen any of this since using vista from rc1, rc2, rtm -

have u tried to extract this particular exe on another system (vista or xp)? what error message would u have when trying this?

u mentioned that "The exe's just aernt appearing" - can u expand on this? u cannot see it/them? from explorer? from within winrar?

    cheers ...

Thanks for the reply, sorry for the lack of details so here it goes:

Im using winrar and within winrar Ill have 3 files, a txt a html and the exe. Ill select all of them and extract them to a certain directory and the other files will extract with no problem, but the exe doesnt. There is no error message or notification of anything, it just will not extract. I open windows explorer to open the binder and the two other files are present, but not the exe. There are no hidden files and i run a search in the directory and it shows no exe's a present. Ive tried two different binders from two different sources and tried extracting to different locations. I had the idea of downloading the program on my other computer and trying to get to it through the network, but I shouldnt have to do these things. Ive shutdown the trial for Norton and that also does not solve the problem. Thanks for the assistance.

r u saying that within a packed (zip, exe ..) file u have 3 files? and one of these 3 (the exe file) is another packed file within this packed file?

if u cannot at the moment try the extraction on another system, and short of saying that the file is corrupted (or badly packed), i suggest that u try using another extraction tool ( http://www.filehippo.com/download_7-zip/ - per example) or update to the latest winrar (if u haven't done so) and see if the file in question can be extracted

    cheers ...

Once again thank you for the response.

There is not a zip within a zip, there is only one zip file with 3 seperate files inside, one being the exe. I just used the 7zip program and the same deal. However I did discover something new. With 7zip you have the option of opening a file within the rar before having to extract it. I tried to do this and a small screen with a timer appears and then goes away very quickly, and then nothing. I tried the same thing with the text file and the same small screen appeared quickly, then the text file opened. Im almost certain theres something killing these 'malicious' apps on my computer and I have no third party AV or FW software running.

Just found out some additional info. Went to my other computer which is XP, and I was able to download the rar and extract all the files just fine. I shared the folder and came to my Vista machine and opened the shared folder and there the file was. I right clicked copy and opened up the dir in windows explorer that I want to copy it to and when I clicked paste it said the file no longer existed. I clicked the shared folder to open it again and now the exe was gone! Its even no longer on the XP machine. Something wierd is definitly going on right now and Im pretty sure its got to do with vista. Kind of pissing me off that I have to do this running around, what is Microsoft coming to?

    Also a somewhat unrelated issue.

Using Daemon tools (Version 4.08), I have not been able to successfully mount an image yet. Daemon runs fine and says it mounts successfully and the virtual drive is present when opening my computer, but when I try to open that virtual drive it tells me to insert a disc into the drive. Ive had this experience with multiple image files and the same result each time. I have not tried using any other image mounting programs yet but could this perhaps be an attempt by vista to prevent users from using specific software on there PC's?

were u able to run the unpacked exe under after extracting it xp? and does it disappear if u move around within xp environment?

i haven't lost a file under vista (yet), but once i did lose a content of a TXT file after rebooting. Haven't been able to duplicate this issue, so far.

i got daemon to work ONCE when 1st installed, too many issues under vista even after turning off UAC, running it under Admin. I know of a few friends that got to re-activate Vista once Deamon was installed. One of NBR user got knicked (possibly related with Daemon) for "using" a pirate Vista version even though his was legit.

i currently use MagicISO ( http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm) for mounting ISO under vista, it works ok and it is free

    cheers ...

Yes I was able to run the exe, I had not tried moving it to different locations I guess I just didnt think of that, but I have a feeling it would have moved just fine. I can try it out later on today though. That is a bummer about Daemon not being able to work I have used it for years with no issues. Ive been reading on some other forums and some people say that its the built in features of Vista and theres nothing you can do to take them off which even though might be stretchng the truth is still some what sad. We call them PCs for a reason becasue they are our personal property and I dont think MS has too much of a say (or right to prohibhit) what we should or shouldnt be doing on them. I just really hope there is some sort of ability to get these 'features' disabled so I can carry on with my work. Thanks for all the help qhn.

:) i m sure that it is just a matter of (short) time until most 3rd party apps would catch up with vista. it has been a long time ago between os updates, but i do remember the same (worst) issues that happened from 98 to xp

    cheers ...

I use Daemon tools under Vista Business and it works just fine. Mount an image and it shows up and can be used without problems.

So does anyone have any solution to my issue with the exe's? Or can point me in the direction I could receive further help because I am totally clueless at this point and need to get this issue resolved.
