Erm, possibly major problem. After a recent update, like just today, my laptop just cannot get past the configuring stage of updating. Every other reboot, there's this "Hcontrol" problem thingy, and askes to terminate but it comes up too quick for me to click OK. I'm seriously worried, I searched google and apparently it's happened before. I do not want to reformat Vista.

    any help? =/

It's not an update problem. Your function key control program just happened to crash and corrupted its files. Boot into Safe Mode and go to msconfig to disable HControl from starting up. Then go into normal mode and uninstall HControl. Restart and reinstall your function key driver/program.

Safe mode didn't work, rebooted again.

Can I system restore from a recovery disk? and if so, how? Typical laptop company didn't give a full Vista disk, so yeah I'm not so sure how I can go repair this without one.

Update: gah, I feel like a wounded roman on the battefield. I used my recovery disk to recover the first partition, luckily I don't need to lose my most important files. I'll see what happens after this.

sweetstyle, one of the causes of rebooting is defective ram, take out from the banks and leave one at a time for checking if that is defective. use memtest program to check it.
