Has MS released any updates that increase the painfully slow USB HD and flash drive transfer times?
I am using my Lacie USB 2.0 HD to transfer to 4 gig files (about 5 of them) into my documents and man, its taking forever. I know there are a ton of people having this issue so I was wondering if they had fixed it yet or if we'll have to wait until Vista SP1.

SP1 is only a few days away apparently, so you'll probably know soon enough :D.

So by Greg's response, I'm assuming there is no official fix for the slow USB transfers as of yet?
If so I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

My understanding is that a fix for this is in SP1, there was a hotfix but I never bothered to explore it (too many other issues so I went to XP for now).

This is one of the many issues I monitor with Vista, and one of the few that seem to still be outstanding. I'm very interested in your results post-SP1.

Its fast for me. The only slowness was for network transfers. I transfered about 20gbs in only a few minutes to my external hard drive.

Try using a different usb port, or reinstalling your usb drivers.

There was a fix for it in the Vista SP1-RC, so I'm guessing it'll be present in the official SP1 coming out tomorrow.

how slow is "slow"? I haven't experienced slowness with usb transfers using external 2.5" hard disks in different enclosures.

"Slow" is stupid slow, like almost half an hour for 15 gigs from a regular Lacie USB 2.0 7200rpm drive that is faster than a bus powered 2.5" drive.

I've tried everything, and this is a brand new install with the latest in everything updated with all brand new hardware, so it is a Vista issue here, as I had XP Pro on it a few weeks ago and transfers were lightening quick, like nizzy had a few minutes for lots of gigs to/from an external drive.

I guess I'll wait for SP1, Vista isnt that bad overall, this is the only thing that sucks about it for my use. That and the official IBM Quadro drivers are the only ones that let my laptop sleep and reduce brightness, but hey, stable is more important than gaming.

Actually I have transferred stuff under XP Pro from my main USB 2.0 320 Lacie to my second USB 2.0 250gb Lacie and it did take a heck of a lot longer, more buses to go through on the motherboard and all that jazz.

why are you guys so greedy? 15mb/s (which is the lowest rate posted here) is very fast for USB. I doubt it'd get any higher in XP

First of all, if someone can copy 20GB of data to USB in "a few minutes", I'd like to know what hardware he has. At maximum USB2 rate of 400Mbit/s, it takes 7 mins and 10 secs to transfer 20GB of data (do the math!). And I have never seen any USB drive approaching maximum rate. If you get 12-13 mins you should be mighty pleased.

Seecond of all, I have a Dell E1405 T2400 laptop with XP pre-installed. I achieve 27MB per sec transfering data maximum. After upgrading to Vista Ultimate, using the exact same set of hardware, the best I got is 11MB. So the slow HD transfer is definitely a serious performance issue.

Heck I have a XPS420 Core 2 Quad with 4GB RAM and dual 750GB 7200k harddisks, and I could not get better than 13MB from my internal disk to USB drive.

I like most everything about Vista, but I keep an XP machine around just so I can do file copy faster.

Err...you need to look up USB specs. 60MB/s max rate, with the typical rate being 30-40MB/s. I get about 30MB/s with an old IDE drive in an external enclosure.

15MB/s is probably average for a USB flash drive, not a hard drive.

Xfered two 500 gig drives thru USB gets me around 50GB an hour using XP time stamps on the files. Have not done this on new Vista machine..yet.

    YMMV

Sorry to resurrect and old thread, but I just got a brand new HP dv2700t, and I have been getting ready to do a clean install by making recovery DVDs, copying files, etc. Right now I have been trying to copy the swsetup folder, which is about 3.6Gb, to an 8Gb USB stick. It has been going about 1MB/sec, dropping down to 800KB/sec at times, and it has been over an hour. This is with a factory install, Vista Premium SP1... What a heck is this? This is just crazy!!

Install and use TeraCopy. It copies files much faster in vista and it takes over normal copy actions (which can be undone) so it opens when needed. One of the greatest pieces of software i have tested for vista. I'll keep it installed on my machine until vista improves in that area.

    That was an old thread.

Rite now the problem is essentially fixed.

but still the transfer is not as fast as on XP for same size of files.

Is it because of DRM? I would like to bet on it that its DRM which is causing the slow transfer.

Someone must be knowing better on our forum
